Observation of the Continental Crust through Drilling II
Author: Hans-Jürgen Behr
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642456162
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 244
Book Description
The purpose of this book is to inform geoscientists about the progress made in scientific continental deep drilling as a new method for studying the continental crust. The Seeheim symposium was the second meeting organized for experts of the various national programs to present and discuss the results and progress made in their respective programs since the first symposium in Tarrytown in 1984. Various contributors dealt with the present state of - and experience in - deep drilling techniques as well as with the development of logging tools for drilling at high temperatures. Special emphasis was laid on the Continental Deep Drilling Program of the Federal Republic of Germany and its scientific aims.

Flow Processes in Faults and Shear Zones
Author: G. Ian Alsop
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 9781862391536
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 396
Book Description
Faults and their deeper level equivalents, shear zones, are localized regions of intense deformation within the Earth. They are recognized at all scales from micro to plate boundary, and are important examples of the nature of heterogeneous deformation in natural rocks. Faults and shear zones are significant as they profoundly influence the location, architecture and evolution of a broad range of geological phenomenao The topography and bathymetry of the Earth's surface is marked by mountain belts and sedimentary basins that are controlled by faults and shear zoneso In addition, faults and shear zones control fluid migration and transport including hydrothermal and hydrocarbon systems. Once faults and shear zones are established, they are often long-lived features prone to multiple reactivation over very large time-scales. This collection of papers addresses lithospheric deformation and the rheology of shear zones, together with processes of partitioning and the unravelling of fault and shear zone histories.

Basement Correlation Across the North Atlantic
Author: Jean-Pierre Lefort
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642733506
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 358
Book Description
Major structural features are used in this study to reconstruct the links which existed between North America, Europe and Africa before the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean. The synthesis of geophysical and geochemical data as well as geological observations allows the recognition of the original geometry of the Grenvillian, Cadomian, Caledonian, Ligerian-Acadian and Hercynian foldbelts and the identification of ancient plate sutures. The reader will find a wealth of information based not only on the English but also on the French and Spanish literature, thus opening less known results to the international community.

Regional Trends in the Geology of the Appalachian-Caledonian-Hercynian-Mauritanide Orogen
Author: P.E. Schenk
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400972393
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 391
Book Description
The classical Appalachian, Caledonian, Hercynian, and Mauritanide orogens are now only segments of a once-continuous Paleozoic mountain belt which has been fragmented during Mesozoic-Cenozoic formation of the North Atlantic Ocean. These segments are major parts of the countries surrounding the North Atlantic - most of which are members of NATO. The aim of this NATO conference was to evaluate these fragments in terms of their pre-Mesozoic positions, and to attempt a synthesis of their geologic evolution on an international and orogen-wide scale. Geologists who have studied these scattered remnants have been separated by both geography and discipline. Orogen-wide syntheses have beeen attempted in the past by individuals who are specialists not only in discipline but also in geography; therefore, these attempts have not been satisfactory to everyone. This conference brought together the foremost specialists in different disciplines from each country. They attempted to teach other specialists, not only in their own fields, but in other disciplines, about regional variations and particular problems. The resulting international cross-fertilization, both within and between speciaLties, enriched individual workers and helped to provide a multi-disciplinary overview of the orogen.
