This welcome study corrects this omission by profiling more than ninety current umpires, summarizing their professional history, and charting their performance at home plate from 2007 through 2010. Annual and four-season rankings place the umpires according to four categories: runs per nine innings, walks per nine innings, strikeouts per nine innings, and strikeout-to-walk ratio. The statistical analysis reveals that the home plate umpire's influence on a game can be huge, both in terms of runs scored and the distribution of walks and strikeouts. By introducing umpires as individuals and encouraging a rational discussion of their work, this examination depicts umpires as dynamic actors whose impact on the game can be measured, analyzed, and enjoyed.

Baseball has long provided statisticians a playground for analysis. In this report we discuss the history of Major League Baseball (MLB) umpires, MLB data collection, and the use of technology in sports officiating. We use PITCHf/x data to answer 3 questions. 1) Has the proportion of incorrect calls made by a major league umpire decreased over time? 2) Does the proportion of incorrect calls differ for umpires hired prior to the implementation of technology in evaluating umpire performance from those hired after? 3) Does the rate of change in the proportion of incorrect calls differ for umpires hired prior to the implementation of technology in evaluating umpire performance from those hired after? PITCHf/x is a publicly available database which gathers characteristics for every pitch thrown in one of the 30 MLB parks. In 2002, MLB began to use camera technology in umpire evaluations; prior to 2007, the data were not publicly available. Data were collected at the pitch level and the proportion of incorrect calls was calculated for each umpire for the first third, second third, and last third of each of the seasons for 2008-2011. We collected data from retrosheet.org, which provides game summary information. We also determined the year of each umpire's MLB debut to differentiate pre- and post-technology hired umpires for our analysis. We answered our questions of interest using longitudinal data analysis, using a random coefficients model. We investigated the choice of covariance structure for our random coefficients model using Akaike's Information Criterion and the Bayesian Information Criterion. Further, we compared our random coefficients model to a fixed slopes model and a general linear model.

Over the past thirty years, sports history-especially baseball history-has exploded onto the academic scene and has become a legitimate historical field of study, much more than just a game. While baseball history has emerged as a legitimate historical subfield, baseball umpires themselves have oddly escaped critical analysis. The current literature on umpires is scattered and fragmented with few scholars outside of psychology and law scrutinizing the umpiring profession. Academic historians have all but ignored these "men in blue." This dissertation rectifies that gap, synthesizing existing secondary literature with original research-such as oral histories, thoughtful investigation of memoirs, artifacts, game film, and archival research-and offering a deep critical analysis of baseball umpires within the context of cultural social constructs. Focusing predominately on the post-1970 era, this thesis examines how historical concepts of American manhood influenced how Major League umpires perform their trade on and off the field. Most importantly, this project demonstrates that a 'bottoms up' comprehensive analysis of an otherwise forgotten profession can give us a fresh lens for studying how large historical trends involving masculinity, brotherhood, honor, and health manifest themselves in American popular culture. As a result, by scrutinizing and evaluating the cultural significance of professional baseball umpires and the social constructs by which they adhere, this dissertation will enrich our understanding of baseball history and American culture itself.

This paper examines the role of changes in monitoring, technological innovation, performance standards, and collective bargaining as they relate to performance improvements among Major League Baseball umpires from 1988 through 2013. I find structural changes in performance concurrent with known bargaining struggles, and substantial improvements in performance after implementation of incentive pay and new technological monitoring and training. Not only do umpires improve performance in expected ways, but the variability in umpire performance has also decreased substantially. These changes have reduced offensive output often attributed to a crackdown on performance enhancing drug use in MLB.
