Hong Kong

Hong Kong PDF Author: Stephen Chiu
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113460064X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 201

Book Description
Hong Kong is a small city with a big reputation. As mainland China has become an 'economic powerhouse' Hong Kong has taken a route of development of its own, flourishing as an entrepot and a centre of commerce and finance for Chinese business, then as an industrial city and subsequently a regional and international financial centre. This volume examines the developmental history of Hong Kong, focusing on its rise to the status of a Chinese global city in the world economy. Chiu and Lui's analysis is distinct in its perspective of the development as an integrated process involving economic, political and social dimensions, and as such this insightful and original book will be a core text on Hong Kong society for students.

ISBN: 1315503042
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 321

Book Description
The issues surrounding Hong Kong's global position and international links grow increasingly complex by the day as the process of Hong Kong's transformation from a British colony to a Chinese Special Administration Region unfolds. This volume addresses a number of questions relating to this process. How international is Hong Kong? What are its global and international dimensions? How important are these dimensions to its continued success? How will these dimensions change, especially beyond the sphere of economics? Is Hong Kong's internationalization, defined in terms of its willingness to embrace international values and its capacity to maintain its international presence, at risk? These questions are presented as they pertain to the changing situation; relations between mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong; the positions of Australia, Canada and the United States on Hong Kong; internalization of international legal values; Americanization vs. Asianization; linkages to the world through Guangdong; strategies to emigrate overseas, cultural internationalization; media internationalization and universities within the global economy.

Chinese Dual-Class Shares Listed in Hong Kong and Mainland China

Chinese Dual-Class Shares Listed in Hong Kong and Mainland China PDF Author: Patrick Müller
Publisher: diplom.de
ISBN: 3836609967
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 122

Book Description
Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: This paper aims at explaining the phenomenon of price anomalies between dual-class shares of companies located in mainland China (hereafter China). A-shares listed on either the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SHSE) or Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE) command a premium over the price of the corresponding firm s H-shares traded at the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (HKSE). This pricing puzzle arises from the segmentation of Chinese equity markets H-shares may be exclusively acquired by Hong Kong residents and international investors whereas A-shares are restricted to mainland Chinese investors. Although both classes of stock are entitled to the same future cash flows, investors are only willing to buy H-shares at a price significantly lower than that of A-shares. This unique setup offers the opportunity to test competing theories about the effects of market segmentation on asset pricing and to examine the factors that induce the price gap between cross-listed shares on different stock exchanges. Knowledge of the variables determining the price spread between H- and A-shares can make valuable contributions in a number of ways. Firstly, companies in mainland China pursuing initial public offerings (IPO) or seasoned equity offerings (SEO) may base their financing decision on a more thorough understanding of the parameters affecting stock prices of cross-listings in the respective markets. Secondly, policymakers in emerging country stock markets may draw conclusions concerning the design of foreign ownership regulation and investment restraints imposed on domestic and foreign investors. Lastly, international and local investors may build on a more profound understanding of the H- versus A-share discount (hereafter H-share discount) to narrow down attractive investment opportunity sets, especially in the light of the latest regulatory changes on the Chinese equity market. As of August 2007 the government body monitoring and regulating the national currency, China s State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), loosened its rigorous foreign exchange policy. Prior to the recent SAFE ruling, the annual amount to be freely converted from Chinese Yuan Renminbi (RMB) into foreign currencies was capped at a 50,000 United States Dollar (USD) limit. Under the new regime, mainland retail investors are granted unlimited convertibility of RMB into Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) given that investments flow into the Hong Kong securities market. In the [...]

Dynamics and Dilemma

Dynamics and Dilemma PDF Author: Bin Yu
Publisher: Nova Publishers
ISBN: 9781560723035
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
The authors treat the interactive process between the mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong as a convenient organising framework to describe the economic, social, and communicative intercourse between the "core" Chinese entities -- mainly the mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong -- as well as the Chinese communities in other countries. The interactions between various Chinese entities are defined here as an informal, spontaneous, and interactive process incorporating a deeper cultural cohesion and a complex relationship across formal political boundaries, and sometimes well beyond official anticipation and regulation.
