Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 172833408X
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 189
Book Description
This book was inspired by parents, teachers and students of the Salvation Army School in Belize City, the Pilgrim Fellowship Mennonite School in Hattieville, and the Hattieville Government School. Having taught at each of these institutions for several years, it was my privilege and joy to prepare students for various occasions such as end of school programs, September Celebrations, Christmas Programs, and the Festival of Arts. Some of the poems were performed as skits, while others were recited by individuals wearing appropriate costumes. Several parents and teachers have encouraged me to compile the poems and to distribute them to schools so that more Belizean students can benefit from them

Standard English
Author: Tony Bex
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113465314X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 325
Book Description
Standard English draws together the leading international scholars in the field, who confront the debates surrounding 'Standard English', grammar and correctness head-on. These debates are as intense today as ever and extend far beyond an academic context. Current debates about the teaching of English in the school curriculum and concerns about declining standards of English are placed in a historical, social and international context. Standard English: * explores the definitions of 'Standard English', with particular attention to distinctions between spoken and written English * traces the idea of 'Standard English' from its roots in the late seventeenth century through to the present day. This is an accessible, seminal work which clarifies an increasingly confused topic. It includes contributions from: Ronald Carter, Jenny Cheshire, Tony Crowley, James Milroy, Lesley Milroy and Peter Trudgill.

The Caribbean Story Finder
Author: Sharon Barcan Elswit
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476663041
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 317
Book Description
The Caribbean islands have a vibrant oral folklore. In Jamaica, the clever spider Anansi, who outsmarts stronger animals, is a symbol of triumph by the weak over the powerful. The fables of the foolish Juan Bobo, who tries to bring milk home in a burlap bag, illustrate facets of traditional Puerto Rican life. Conflict over status, identity and power is a recurring theme--in a story from Trinidad, a young bull, raised by his mother in secret, challenges his tyrannical father who has killed all the other males in the herd. One in a series of folklore reference guides by the author, this volume shares summaries of 438 tales--some in danger of disappearing--retold in English and Creole from West African, European, and slave indigenous cultures in 24 countries and territories. Tales are grouped in themed sections with a detailed subject index and extensive links to online sources.

Traditional Games of Belize
Nostratic
Author: Joseph C. Salmons
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027275718
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 300
Book Description
The “Nostratic” hypothesis — positing a common linguistic ancestor for a wide range of language families including Indo-European, Uralic, and Afro-Asiatic — has produced one of the most enduring and often intense controversies in linguistics. Overwhelmingly, though, both supporters of the hypothesis and those who reject it have not dealt directly with one another’s arguments. This volume brings together selected representatives of both sides, as well as a number of agnostic historical linguists, with the aim of examining the evidence for this particular hypothesis in the context of distant genetic relationships generally. The volume contains discussion of variants of the Nostratic hypothesis (A. Bomhard; J. Greenberg; A. Manaster-Ramer, K. Baertsch, K. Adams, & P. Michalove), the mathematics of chance in determining the relationships posited for Nostratic (R. Oswalt; D. Ringe), and the evidence from particular branches posited in Nostratic (L. Campbell; C. Hodge; A. Vovin), with responses and additional discussion by E. Hamp, B. Vine, W. Baxter and B. Comrie.
