Magnesium in the Central Nervous System

Magnesium in the Central Nervous System PDF Author: Robert Vink
Publisher: University of Adelaide Press
ISBN: 0987073052
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
The brain is the most complex organ in our body. Indeed, it is perhaps the most complex structure we have ever encountered in nature. Both structurally and functionally, there are many peculiarities that differentiate the brain from all other organs. The brain is our connection to the world around us and by governing nervous system and higher function, any disturbance induces severe neurological and psychiatric disorders that can have a devastating effect on quality of life. Our understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the brain has improved dramatically in the last two decades. In particular, the critical role of cations, including magnesium, has become evident, even if incompletely understood at a mechanistic level. The exact role and regulation of magnesium, in particular, remains elusive, largely because intracellular levels are so difficult to routinely quantify. Nonetheless, the importance of magnesium to normal central nervous system activity is self-evident given the complicated homeostatic mechanisms that maintain the concentration of this cation within strict limits essential for normal physiology and metabolism. There is also considerable accumulating evidence to suggest alterations to some brain functions in both normal and pathological conditions may be linked to alterations in local magnesium concentration. This book, containing chapters written by some of the foremost experts in the field of magnesium research, brings together the latest in experimental and clinical magnesium research as it relates to the central nervous system. It offers a complete and updated view of magnesiums involvement in central nervous system function and in so doing, brings together two main pillars of contemporary neuroscience research, namely providing an explanation for the molecular mechanisms involved in brain function, and emphasizing the connections between the molecular changes and behavior. It is the untiring efforts of those magnesium researchers who have dedicated their lives to unraveling the mysteries of magnesiums role in biological systems that has inspired the collation of this volume of work.

Potassium Its Biol Significance

Potassium Its Biol Significance PDF Author: Robert Whang
Publisher: Springer
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
Abstract: Eleven authoritative review articles written for nutrition scientists and clinicians address various general aspects of potassium (K) metabolism, the interrelationships between K and magnesium (Mg) as applied to the heart, and clinical aspects of how K and Mg affect heart activity. While clinically-oriented, the major thrust of the reviews is toward developing an understanding of intracellular events occurring in perturbed K metabolism and the association of Mg with K metabolism. General aspects include: the role of K in biological evolution; methods for K analysis; K metabolism; nutritional factors associated with K metabolism; and the dysfunctions of hypo- and hyperkalemia. Clinical aspects include: heart function relative to cellular K fluxes; an overview of glucose-insulin-K infusion in cases of myocardial infarction; K and Mg as related to digitalis toxicity, and extra- and intracellular K, Mg, diuretics, and arrhythmias. wz).

Magnesium, Key to Health

Magnesium, Key to Health PDF Author: Ana Maria Lajusticia Bergasa
Publisher:
ISBN: 9783709501344
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 114

Book Description
Our modern diet is deficient in magnesium, an element that is crucial for health. This deficiency causes problems related to the nervous system, such as anxiety and restlessness. As magnesium is involved in muscle relaxation, this deficiency is also manifested as muscle spasms, arrhythmias, tachycardia, breathing difficulties and sometimes hypertension. Magnesium is essential in the synthesis of our body's proteins, and is therefore a key factor in the manufacture and repair of wear in our cartilages, bones, tendons, stomach walls and blood vessels. Furthermore, when there are lower levels of it in the blood, less of it is eliminated by the urine, which leads to the formation of kidney stones. This book, which was published by Ana Maria Lajusticia Bergasa to great acclaim, includes the latest studies carried out which confirm the enormous importance of magnesium for our health.

Transdermal Magnesium Therapy

Transdermal Magnesium Therapy PDF Author: Dr. Mark Sircus
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 145028356X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 360

Book Description
This second edition of Transdermal Magnesium Therapy offers a full medical review of how magnesium affects cancer, the heart, diabetes, the emotions, inflammation, surgery, autism, transdermal medicine, and so much more. Magnesium is nothing short of a miracle; it has the potential to save you from considerable suffering and pain. The information presented here could even save your life. Magnesium is the lamp of life and one of the most important keys to overall health. When applied in the correct way, magnesium offers us a return to strength and vigor. When used in the emergency room, magnesium can save the day for both heart and stroke patients. What you will be introduced to is magnesium oil, a natural concentrated form of magnesium chloride that can be applied directly to the skin for intense effect. When we are deficient in magnesium, over three hundred enzymes in our body are unable to function properly. Magnesium deficiency has been scientifically identified as a critical factor in the onset of a wide variety of diseases. For various reasons and to varying degree, two-thirds or more of the population is magnesium deficient. Learn how to use this powerful secret to good health in Transdermal Magnesium Therapy.

Magnesium Deficiency in the Pathogenesis of Disease

Magnesium Deficiency in the Pathogenesis of Disease PDF Author: Mildred S. Seelig
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468491083
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 495

Book Description
There is a large and rapidly growing body of literature on the importance of mag nesium in biochemical and physiological processes. There is also much evidence that magnesium deficiency, alone and in combination with agents that interfere with its utilization, is associated with functional and structural abnormalities of mem branes, cells, organs, and systems. The manifestations of the changes caused by magnesium deficiency depend upon its extent and duration and on variable factors. Among the conditions that increase the risk of magnesium deficiency are (1) meta bolic factors that affect the absorption, distribution, and excretion of this mineral; (2) disease and therapy; (3) physiologic states that increase requirements for nutrients; and (4) nutritional imbalances. Excesses of nutrients that interfere with the absorption or increase the excretion of magnesium-such as fat, phosphate, sugar, and vitamin D-can contribute to long-lasting relative magnesium deficiency. All have been implicated in several of the diseases considered in this book. Whether their influence on the need for magnesium is a common denominator remains to be investigated further.
