The History of Wisconsin, Volume II

The History of Wisconsin, Volume II PDF Author: Richard N. Current
Publisher: Wisconsin Historical Society
ISBN: 087020629X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 701

Book Description
This second volume in the History of Wisconsin series introduces us to the first generation of statehood, from the conversion of prairie and forests into farmland to the development of cities and industry. In addition, this volume presents a synthesis of the Civil War and Reconstruction era in Wisconsin. Scarcely a decade after entering the Union, the state was plunged into the nationwide debate over slavery, the secession crisis, and a war in which 11,000 "Badger Boys in Blue" gave their lives. Wisconsin's role in the Civil War is chronicled, along with the post-war years. Complete with photographs from the Historical Society's collections, as well as many pertinent maps, this book is a must-have for anyone interested in this era of Wisconsin's history.

Book Description
Thure Kumlien was one of Wisconsin’s earliest Swedish settlers and an accomplished ornithologist, botanist, and naturalist in the mid-1800s, though his name is not well known today. He settled on the shore of Lake Koshkonong in 1843 and soon began sending bird specimens to museums and collectors in Europe and the eastern United States, including the Smithsonian. Later, he prepared natural history exhibits for the newly established University of Wisconsin and became the first curator and third employee of the new Milwaukee Public Museum. For all of his achievements, Kumlien never gained the widespread notoriety of Wisconsin naturalists John Muir, Increase Lapham, or Aldo Leopold. Kumlien did his work behind the scenes, content to spend his days in the marshes and swamps rather than in the public eye. He once wrote that he was not “cut out for pretensions and show in the world.” Yet, his detailed observations of Wisconsin’s natural world—including the impact of early agriculture on the environment—were hugely important to the fields of ornithology and botany. As this carefully researched and lovingly rendered biography proves, Thure Kumlien deserves to be remembered as one of Wisconsin’s most influential naturalists.

Book Description
Dane County is located in the center of Wisconsin between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River, and is famed for its abundance of pre-historic artifacts. Opening with the history of the city of Madison, the first part of this extensive work looks at a diverse set of topics; early settlement of the region, establishment of the capital, pioneers and notable persons, the state university, the state historical society, churches and pastors, regional newspapers, merchants and bankers, schools, literature and the arts, historic homes, visitors and resorts, and Native American mounds, monuments, caves, and relics. The second part concentrates on Dane County. The towns surveyed include: Albion, Berry Black Earth, Blooming Grove, Blue Mounds, Bristol, Burke, Cambridge, Christiana, Cottage Grove, Cross Plains, Dane, Deerfield, Dunn, Dunkirk, Fitchburg, Madison, Mazomanie, Medina, Middleton, Montrose, Mount Vernon, Oregon, Perry, Pleasant Springs, Primrose, Roxbury, Rutland, Springdale, Springfield, Stoughton, Sun Prairie, Vermont, Verona, Vienna, West Blue Mounds, Westport and Village of Waunakee, Windsor, and York. Each town is afforded a similar (if more concise) treatment to that provided for Madison. The adjacent towns of Brooklyn, Edgerton, Evansville, Lake Koshkonong, and Lodi are also described. The town histories are supplemented by a section of personal reminiscences, a listing of county officers, and numerous illustrations of people and landmarks.
