There is little research on the initiation and progression of new romantic relationships for older people, whether after divorce or widowhood, or for those who have never married. This thesis adds to the literature with an Australian investigation of romantic relationships which begin in later life - with a special focus on relationships formed via online technology. Interviews with 45 older adults, aged 60 years of age and over, indicate that older people are looking for and finding egalitarian relationships based on emotional and sexual equality - but not necessarily based on cohabitation or monogamy. Though these interviewees developed meaningful and sexually intimate relationships, very few progressed to cohabitation or marriage - with most preferring to date or live separately, even when their relationships were long-term and committed. This thesis argues that such 'living apart together' relationships embody a new and increasing family form in Australia.
