Love is in the Air, Wine is in the Glass

Love is in the Air, Wine is in the Glass PDF Author: Wayne Moody
Publisher: Fulton Books, Inc.
ISBN: 1649525036
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 20

Book Description
This publication was created to inform others of the recent California Wildfires. It focuses on the Tubbs fire in Santa Rosa, California, about 3 years ago, which, at that time was the most destructive Wildfire in California History. The publication is a pictorial record of the devastation caused by the fire. Wildfires were created hundreds of millions of years ago to burn forests so new growth could replace the old. Volcanoes and lighting started the fires. Redwood forests grew to absorb moisture and moisturize dry forest materials to control burning. The beginning pages of the book show how the Sonoma Valley looked before the fire. Then there is a narrative of how the fire grew, followed by a pictorial display of the fire devastation. I believe, having lived in California most of my life, the fire occurred in Santa Rosa, as creation of the Golden Gate bridge resulting in migration of industries from San Francisco to the North Bay. Sleepy small towns became Cities. Santa Rosa grew to 180,000 when the fire hit. Fires such as this can travel 7 miles per hour, and fire tornadoes can strike beyond the fire boundary.

Love by the Glass

Love by the Glass PDF Author: Dorothy J. Gaiter
Publisher: Villard
ISBN: 1588361519
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 375

Book Description
“I am deeply inspired by this heartwarming story of how two people found love and—even better—a way to get paid for drinking wine.” —Dave Barry Internationally renowned journalists Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher present a captivating memoir about falling in love with each other and with wine. She grew up in the all-black environment of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. He was raised in Jacksonville, Florida, where his was one of a handful of Jewish families. When they met on June 4, 1973, in the newsroom of The Miami Herald, she says, “I felt in my bones like I had known him forever.” And he says, “I felt the instant I saw her that we had always been together, and knew we always would be.” That passion for each other and for wine has made their column a must-read for millions of neophyte and veteran wine lovers, who also follow their appearances on Martha Stewart’s TV show. The annual global celebration of wine that they created, “Open That Bottle Night,” encourages readers to finally drink that special wine they have been keeping. As Dottie and John write, “Wine can conjure up memories in a way that few other things can,” whether it’s a rare Burgundy or a bottle of cold duck. Frank J. Prial of The New York Times said of their first book, The Wall Street Journal Guide to Wine, “Their enthusiasm for the grape . . . is exceeded only by their enthusiasm for each other. It spills over on every other page.” Indeed, John and Dottie say they don’t write a wine column; they write a column about more important things. This book follows them from love at first sight, through a life of journalism, to a triumph on the basketball court at Madison Square Garden. You’ll discover the joys of wine along with them, but you’ll also discover that wine is really about good times, bad times, moments shared with loved ones, and new friends. It’s about memories. It’s about life.

Neuroenology

Neuroenology PDF Author: Gordon M. Shepherd
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231542879
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 297

Book Description
In his new book, Gordon M. Shepherd expands on the startling discovery that the brain creates the taste of wine. This approach to understanding wine's sensory experience draws on findings in neuroscience, biomechanics, human physiology, and traditional enology. Shepherd shows, just as he did in Neurogastronomy: How the Brain Creates Flavor and Why It Matters, that creating the taste of wine engages more of the brain than does any other human behavior. He clearly illustrates the scientific underpinnings of this process, along the way enhancing our enjoyment of wine. Neuroenology is the first book on wine tasting by a neuroscientist. It begins with the movements of wine through the mouth and then consults recent research to explain the function of retronasal smell and its extraordinary power in creating wine taste. Shepherd comprehensively explains how the specific sensory pathways in the cerebral cortex create the memory of wine and how language is used to identify and imprint wine characteristics. Intended for a broad audience of readers—from amateur wine drinkers to sommeliers, from casual foodies to seasoned chefs—Neuroenology shows how the emotion of pleasure is the final judge of the wine experience. It includes practical tips for a scientifically informed wine tasting and closes with a delightful account of Shepherd's experience tasting classic Bordeaux vintages with French winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet of the Chateau Petrus and Dominus Estate.
