Rising Concentration in Asia-Latin American Value Chains PDF Author: Osvaldo Rosales
Publisher: UN
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
Dynamic Asia has overtaken the European Union as Latin America and the Caribbean's second largest export market, after the United States. However, the region's exports to Asia remain concentrated in few commodities involved a small number of large firms. This book explores the present and future scope for the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in biregional trade and value chains and the measures that can be taken to make those chains more inclusive and sustainable. It encourages governments in Latin America to improve the business environment in order to encourage multinational firms to invest, upgrade and innovate in the region.

Upgrading to Compete Global Value Chains, Clusters, and SMEs in Latin America

Upgrading to Compete Global Value Chains, Clusters, and SMEs in Latin America PDF Author: Carlo Pietrobelli
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Does enterprise participation in global markets ensure sustainable income growth? Policies have often been designed in the belief that this is true, but competitiveness and participation in international markets may take very different forms, and developing countries do not always benefit. This book presents a series of rich and original field studies from Latin America, conducted by the authors with the same consistent methodological approach, and represents a theory-generating exercise within clusters and economic development literature. The main question addressed is how Latin American small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may participate in global markets in ways that provide for sustainable income growth, the “high road” to competitiveness. In contrast, the “low road” is often typically followed by small firms from developing countries, which often compete by squeezing wages and revenues rather than by increasing productivity, salaries, and profits.

The Economics of Industrial Development

The Economics of Industrial Development PDF Author: John Weiss
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113693684X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 406

Book Description
The spread of the manufacturing industry is an important part of economic development, creating jobs, new products and trade and investment links between countries. Understanding this process is an important part of understanding how countries develop and how they are affected by current globalization. The economic geography of the world has been changing significantly in the last few decades with old established industrial centres in the developed countries in decline, and new centres emerging in countries that were once thought of as poor and still developing. However, this process has been very uneven with some parts of the developing world still largely non-industrial. This book aims to explain this process from the perspective of developing countries. It charts current trends in industrial development drawing on available statistics and explores different perspectives on the role the manufacturing industry can play. The book covers topics including: aspects of trade policy as they affect industry the international rules of the World Trade Organisation the network of links between firms in different parts of the world economy. Separate chapters examine: the special role of small firms and of technology in industrialisation government policy towards the encouragement of industry, drawing particularly on the experience of economies in East Asia (the original Asian Tigers) recent developments in China and India and their implications for other countries. The book draws on simple concepts of economic theory but avoids a technical mathematical approach and should be accessible to a wide audience. It extends and updates the author’s earlier work on industrialisation published by Routledge (Industry in Developing Countries, 1990 and Industrialisation and Globalisation, 2002) and aims to present a comprehensive overview of these important contemporary issues. The book is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate level courses, but will also be invaluable to professionals working in development.

Social Inclusion and Economic Development in Latin America

Social Inclusion and Economic Development in Latin America PDF Author: Mayra Buvinić
Publisher: IDB
ISBN: 1931003653
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 361

Book Description
Poverty and inequality in Latin America are easily recognizable in the faces of women, Afro-descendents, the indigenous, people with disabilities, victims of HIV/AIDS, and other groups outside the societal mainstream. Social Inclusion and Economic Development in Latin America reviews the common features of these excluded populations, including their invisibility in official statistics and the stigma, discrimination, and disadvantages they have long endured. But it also examines the region's inclusionary policies and programs that can improve access by these groups to the quality social services and economic and political resources these groups need to level the playing field. Case studies examine ethnic and racial political organization, gender quotas, and labor markets across the region, and social exclusion in Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru. Comparative studies summarize social inclusion policies of both the European Union and selected countries on the Continent.

The Changing Nature of Asian-Latin American Economic Relations

The Changing Nature of Asian-Latin American Economic Relations PDF Author: German King
Publisher: UN
ISBN: 9789211218299
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
La 4e de couverture indique : "The swift expansion of developing Asia is probably the most significant structural change in the world economy of the twenty-first century. Latin America, and in particular South America, have strongly benefited from developing Asia's surge. China has become one of the region's main trade partners. Despite their benefits, strengthened trans-Pacific economic relations have also become a cause for concern in Latin America, due to major imbalances of different kinds. The purpose of this book is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to document the growing investment and trade relations between Latin America and Asia, as well as some of their imbalances. On the other hand, it provides several examples on how to upgrade trans-Pacific economic relations."
