Loose Leaf for Investigating Oceanography

Loose Leaf for Investigating Oceanography PDF Author: Raphael Kudela
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Education
ISBN: 9781259681400
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 512

Book Description
This introductory oceanography text is intended to teach students the tremendous influence oceans have on our lives. They are encouraged to look at oceanography as a cohesive and united discipline rather than a collection of subjects gathered under a marine umbrella. Investigating Oceanography teaches students about the historical, geological, physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the ocean environment using remarkable images and photos. The authors have incorporated essays written by several scientists discussing topics in their fields of specialization. In addition to understanding processes and principles, the authors believe students must have a basic command of the language of marine science in order to understand the constant barrage of information concerning our planet and marine issues. By the end of this course, the authors want students to be prepared for future environmental discussions and the ability to make decisions as informed global citizens.

Structure and Properties of Oriented Polymers

Structure and Properties of Oriented Polymers PDF Author: I. Ward
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401098034
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 515

Book Description
It has become increasingly evident that there is much to begained from a detailed understanding of the structure and properties of polymers in the oriented state. This book reftects the growth of interest in this area of polymer scienceand attempts to give the reader an up to date viewofthe present position. The individual chapters are for the most part self contained, and cover a very wide range of topics. It is intended that each of them should serve the dual purpose of an expository introduction to the subject and a topical review of recent research. It is inevitable that there will be differences of style and approach in the contributions from the different authors. No atternpt has been made to moderate these differences, as they serve to illustrate the diversity of approaches required to give the reader a balanced view of the subject. I should like to thank the contributors for their endeavours, and especially for their patience in accepting modifications and corrections which make for consistency in the book as a whole. 1 am particularly indebted to Professor Leslie Holliday who originally approached me with the proposition that such a book would be a worthwhile venture and to the publishers who have given me every assistance in making its progress as painless as possible.

Kupe and the Corals

Kupe and the Corals PDF Author: Jacqueline L. Padilla-Gamiño
Publisher: Taylor Trade Publishing
ISBN: 1589797574
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 34

Book Description
Kupe and the Corals is the story of Kupe, a young boy who undertakes an amazing voyage of discovery to learn about corals and the importance of coral reefs to all of the many animals that depend upon them. One night while he is fishing with his father, Kupe observes an astonishing event, thousands and thousands of tiny “bubbles” rising to the surface of the waters in the lagoon near where he lives. Kupe is amazed by this sight and wants to learn more about the “strange pink bubbles” that he has captured in an old jam jar. Kupe visits with an elder from his village and a scientist from the nearby marine lab in an attempt to learn more about what he has seen. During his conversations, Kupe learns that what he has captured are tiny coral larvae, baby corals that are produced in the millions over just a few nights each year by the adult corals living in the lagoon. Kupe then goes on to learn more about how corals grow and the importance of corals in building the reefs that provide homes for all of the other wonderful animals that he sees while snorkeling in the lagoon. Now, realizing how important the larvae he has captured are to the health of the coral reef, Kupe happily returns his larvae to the sea. Kupe and the Corals, is the sixth book in the Long Term Ecological Research Network Series.

Soil-structure interaction in seismic analysis

Soil-structure interaction in seismic analysis PDF Author: Alexander Tyapin
Publisher: ASV Construction
ISBN: 919822235X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
Soil-structure interaction (SSI) is an important phenomenon in the seismic response analysis. As seismologists describe seismic excitation in terms of the seismic motion of certain control point at the free surface of the initial site, the question is whether the same point of the structure (after structure appears) will have the same seismic response motion in case of the same seismic event. If yes, then seismic motion from seismologists is directly applied to the base of the structure (it is called “fixed-base analysis”), and they say that “no SSI occurs”’ (though literally speaking soil is forcing structure to move, so interaction is always present). This is a conventional approach in the field of civil engineering. However, if heavy and rigid structure (sometimes embedded) is erected on medium or soft soil site, this structure changes the seismic response motion of the soil as compared to the initial free-field picture. Such a situation is typical for Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs), deeply embedded structures, etc. The book describes different approaches to SSI analysis and different SSI effects. Special attention is paid to the Combined Asymptotic Method (CAM) developed by the author and used for the design of NPPs in seismic regions. Nowadays, some civil structures have parameters comparable to those of NPPs (e.g., masses and embedment), so these approaches become useful for the civil structural engineers as well.
