Plastic Cameras

Plastic Cameras PDF Author: Chris Gatcum
Publisher: Ammonite Press
ISBN: 9781907708404
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
In these days of high tech, high spec digital cameras even the rankest amateur can capture technically professional-looking images – but there's a growing trend of happy-go-lucky snappers who yearn for a more simplistic approach, a return to a time when photography was perhaps less predictable. Decidedly low-tech and highly idiosyncratic plastic, or 'toy' cameras such as the original 1984 Lomo Kompakt Automat (which spawned the term 'Lomography'), the Diana and the Holga, and the recently introduced Blackbird, Fly enable them to create images that – while not technically perfect – display a quirky sense of fun, spontaneity, and creative artiness. Whereas digital cameras and high spec film cameras boast the technology to eradicate undesirable optical 'faults' such as vignetting, barrel and pinchushion distortion, converging verticals and noise, the owners of their cheaper cousins – which have only rudimentary plastic lenses – relish the manifestation of such visual aberrations in their pictures. Colors are typically richly over-saturated, exposure frequently off-kilter, focus dreamily soft. Plastic cameras lack light meters, autofocus, auto film advance, adjustable shutters and digital sensors, notoriously leak light onto the 120 or 35mm roll film they employ, and there are some wacky versions: flamboyant wide-angle fish-eyes, stereo cameras with two lenses and two flashes, pinhole cameras that don't even possess a lens, and multi-lens cameras that create negatives combining up to nine images on a single 35mm frame.

Book Description
Old School Photography is a must-have modern manual for learning how to create great photographs with a 35mm film camera. Famed YouTube personality Kai Wong expertly and humorously shares 100 essential tips for selecting and using film cameras, shooting with film and various lenses, and employing specific techniques to ensure you can get great results quickly. Known for his breadth of knowledge and quick wit, Kai Wong delivers an informative and entertaining read on how to take great film photos. • An informative and entertaining read on how to take great film photos • A must-have guide for those new to old-school film techniques • A much-needed book for the current resurgence of vintage 35mm film cameras Renewed interest in film photography has surged in the past few years, both among those rediscovering their past passion and those discovering it for the first time. Vintage cameras that had previously lost their value are now often worth more than they first sold for due to high demand amongst enthusiasts, students, and collectors. Film manufacturers have even started reissuing long discontinued stocks—for example, Kodak's much-loved and recently re-released classic Ektachrome slide film. In our modern world, billions of people have access to instantaneous photography on their mobile phones, but as a result there has been a resurgent desire for a more tactile, physical, unaltered, and thus honest medium. Much of which, ironically, ends up on the internet, with photography fans and influencers sharing their images across Instagram, Flickr, YouTube, and the like. More so than with digital photography, film photography requires a sense of craft, skill, patience, technical knowledge, and a trial-and-error process that results in a greater sense of accomplishment. Old School Photography is both enlightening and humorous, and attracts a new generation of fans who are eager to experiment with film cameras, make prints, and post their film photographs online.

The Cubs Way

The Cubs Way PDF Author: Tom Verducci
Publisher: Crown
ISBN: 0804190038
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 394

Book Description
The New York Times Bestseller With inside access and reporting, Sports Illustrated senior baseball writer and FOX Sports analyst Tom Verducci reveals how Theo Epstein and Joe Maddon built, led, and inspired the Chicago Cubs team that broke the longest championship drought in sports, chronicling their epic journey to become World Series champions. It took 108 years, but it really happened. The Chicago Cubs are once again World Series champions. How did a team composed of unknown, young players and supposedly washed-up veterans come together to break the Curse of the Billy Goat? Tom Verducci, twice named National Sportswriter of the Year and co-writer of The Yankee Years with Joe Torre, will have full access to team president Theo Epstein, manager Joe Maddon, and the players to tell the story of the Cubs' transformation from perennial underachievers to the best team in baseball. Beginning with Epstein's first year with the team in 2011, Verducci will show how Epstein went beyond "Moneyball" thinking to turn around the franchise. Leading the organization with a manual called "The Cubs Way," he focused on the mental side of the game as much as the physical, emphasizing chemistry as well as statistics. To accomplish his goal, Epstein needed manager Joe Maddon, an eccentric innovator, as his counterweight on the Cubs' bench. A man who encourages themed road trips and late-arrival game days to loosen up his team, Maddon mixed New Age thinking with Old School leadership to help his players find their edge. The Cubs Way takes readers behind the scenes, chronicling how key players like Rizzo, Russell, Lester, and Arrieta were deftly brought into the organization by Epstein and coached by Maddon to outperform expectations. Together, Epstein and Maddon proved that clubhouse culture is as important as on-base-percentage, and that intangible components like personality, vibe, and positive energy are necessary for a team to perform to their fullest potential. Verducci chronicles the playoff run that culminated in an instant classic Game Seven. He takes a broader look at the history of baseball in Chicago and the almost supernatural element to the team's repeated loses that kept fans suffering, but also served to strengthen their loyalty. The Cubs Way is a celebration of an iconic team and its journey to a World Championship that fans and readers will cherish for years to come.

Book Description
Ben Watts has rapidly emerged as one of today's top photographers. His collection of photographic moments captured both on assignment and while working on personal projects covers a broad range of subjects, from street photography to fashion shoots, from hip-hop culture to high school wrestlers. Watts's images not only show the personal visual diary of an artist, but provide a new look at what it means to be young and urban. Often with short notes from himself or his subjects scribbled on the photos, or with bits and pieces from the "site" (an airplane boarding pass, an entry ticket), Watts's images are put together in fantastic collages and combinations that are humorous and insightful at the same time. Big Up is Ben Watts's personal scrapbook reproduced in a large-format book that preserves all the qualities of a photo album. His images--vibrant, energetic, and sensuous--take readers on a photographic journey that stays in mind long after the book has been put down.
