Listening to Latina/o Youth

Listening to Latina/o Youth PDF Author: Kristin Clare Engstrand Moran
Publisher: Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers
ISBN: 9781433107283
Category : Hispanic American teenagers
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
In light of current and projected demographic changes in the U.S., this book examines the attention paid to Latina/o youth from mainstream media conglomerates and the subsequent impact of this attention. In-depth interviews conducted within a family setting provide a rare glimpse into respondents' media consumption patterns and process of reception, and explain the ways in which the media are woven into their daily lives. The book critiques the tendency of mainstream media to reify and contain a Latina/o identity that is then sold back to youth in ways that limit Latino/a agency. Throughout the interviews, young people articulate a hybrid identity highlighting their bicultural experiences. Listening to Latina/o Youth ultimately recommends opening up the possibilities of representation to encourage the acceptance of new voices that challenge the current modes of media production.

Book Description
This book discusses library services to Hispanic/Latino teens, highlighting best practices, examining relevant and responsive services and programs, and reframing existing approaches to serving this segment of the population. Author Salvador Avila, a noted expert and popular lecturer on providing library services to Latino and Spanish speaking-communities, offers ideas and strategies that can be easily duplicated. Grounded in empirical evidence, this book presents what research has indicated is important to teens, Latinos in particular; demonstrates how to incorporate relevant literature into your services; and describes the cultural, social, economic, psychological, technological, and sexual characteristics of this emerging population. The keywords included in this collection represent established and emergent terms, categories, and concepts that undergird Latina/o studies; they delineate the shifting contours of a field best thought of as an intellectual imaginary and experiential project of social and cultural identities within the US academy. Bringing together 63 essays, from humanists, historians, anthropologists, sociologists, among others, each focused on a single term, the volume reveals the broad range of the field while also illuminating the tensions and contestations surrounding issues of language, politics, and histories of colonization, specific to this area of study. Pages : 140

Book Description
Although there is an extensive body of literature on youth voice, research on the experiences of youth of color in general, or Latina/o youth in particular, is limited. Differing experiences of youth voice based on race or culture have also rarely been explored. This study uses a phenomenological lens to understand Latina/o youth's self-perceptions of youth voice, the meaning they attribute to youth voice, and the significance to them of finding and using their voices across different domains of their lives. Seven young people, ages 13-18, participated in this study. A number of themes emerged from interviews with the youth, among them the purpose of youth voice is to have an impact, youth voice includes listening and creating space for everyone to be heard, speaking up is risky and requires courage, youth voice is often tied to efforts for social change, and youth voice is received differently in different settings. While adults and institutions of power often discourage or dismiss youth voice, youth have also experienced encouragement of their voices that has been important and impactful for them.
