ISBN: 080586220X
Category : Administrative agencies
Languages : en
Pages : 750

Book Description
The Academy of Management is proud to announce the inaugural volume of The Academy of Management Annals. This exciting new series follows one guiding principle: The advancement of knowledge is possible only by conducting a thorough examination of what is known and unknown in a given field. Such assessments can be accomplished through comprehensive, critical reviews of the literature--crafted by informed scholars who determine when a line of inquiry has gone astray, and how to steer the research back onto the proper path. The Academy of Management Annals provide just such essential reviews. Written by leading management scholars, the reviews are invaluable for ensuring the timeliness of advanced courses, for designing new investigative approaches, and for identifying faulty methodological or conceptual assumptions. The Annals strive each year to synthesize a vast array of primary research, recognizing past principal contributions while illuminating potential future avenues of inquiry. Volume 1 of the Annals explores a wide spectrum of research: corporate control; nonstandard employment; critical management; physical work environments; public administration team learning; emotions in organizations; leadership and health care; creativity at work; business and the environment; and bias in performance appraisals. Ultimately, academic scholars in management and allied fields (e.g., sociology of organizations and organizational psychology) will see The Academy of Management Annals as a valuable resource to turn to for comprehensive, up-to-date information--published in a single volume every year by the preeminent association for management research.

Social Capital and Strategy Effectiveness: An Empirical Study of Entrepreneurial Ventures in a Transition Economy

Social Capital and Strategy Effectiveness: An Empirical Study of Entrepreneurial Ventures in a Transition Economy PDF Author: I. Manev
Publisher: Litres
ISBN: 5457395359
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
Although new ventures’ competitive positioning and their founders’ social networks are both recognized as important in the context of transition economies, not much is known about their multiplicative effect on performance. We build on the strategic management literature and social network theory to develop theoretical predictions about the role of competitive strategies and social capital for entrepreneurial performance. These are tested with survey data from Bulgaria. We find that both the venture’s competitive strategic positioning and the founder’s networking positively influence performance. The hypothesized moderating effect of networking for the relationship between differentiation strategy and performance received only tentative support. Contrary to expectations, we find a negative moderating effect of networking for the relationship of cost leadership with performance. These results suggest that the entrepreneur’s network plays a role in shaping how strategies influence performance by possibly upholding differentiation and deemphasizing cost leadership strategy. Implications for managerial practice and public policy are discussed.

Exploring Resources and Capabilities Factors Among Entrepreneurial Ventures Using DEMATEL Approach

Exploring Resources and Capabilities Factors Among Entrepreneurial Ventures Using DEMATEL Approach PDF Author: Olamitunji Dakare
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 20

Book Description
Resources and capabilities remain one of the most important factors that influence firms, more especially entrepreneurial ventures, to improve their competitiveness and achieve competitive advantage. In this context, present paper explores how entrepreneurial ventures and small businesses can better identify and distinguish the cause-and-effect relationship amongst resource and capability factors. Resource and capability factors among entrepreneurial ventures were classified into three dimensions and fourteen criteria after a review of the literature. The study applied the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) model to identify and describe the cause-and-effect relationship amongst resource and capability factors. The findings reveal that in prioritizing the importance of criteria and cause-and-effect relationship among criteria under the three core dimensions, firm climate, managerial competence, market knowledge and technological capabilities and equipment were the most critical criteria. Furthermore, the result has shown that firm climate is the most significant criterion in the adjustment of resource and capability factors of entrepreneurial ventures. Therefore, promoting a supportive and conducive firm climate among entrepreneurial ventures can enhance other resources and capabilities factors which, in turn, will improve the overall performance of entrepreneurial ventures and small businesses.

Identity and Resource Mobilization in New Ventures

Identity and Resource Mobilization in New Ventures PDF Author: Gregory C. Fisher
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Identity (Psychology)
Languages : en
Pages : 143

Book Description
This research adopts an identity perspective in examining the mobilization of resources for new ventures. The proposed conceptual model integrates organizational identity theory and individual identity theory to outline how the identity of an individual resource provider interacts with the identity of a new venture in the process of mobilizing resources for the venture. The concept of venture identification, which stems from the alignment of the entrepreneurial identity of a new venture and the individual identity of a resource provider, is offered as a key predictor of the allocation of resources to a new venture. I outline the cognitive and affective mechanisms underlying the process of venture identification, and describe how these mechanisms foster perceptions of venture attractiveness. I develop an instrument to measure entrepreneurial identity and apply it to examine whether identity alignment between a venture and resource provider is related to resource mobilization. The findings suggest that resource providers are more inclined to support new ventures that reflect an entrepreneurial identity similar to their individual identity. Under conditions of high uncertainty, the relationship between venture-resource provider identity matching and resource provider support for a new venture increases. This research contributes to the literature on organizational identity by providing a framework for classifying and analyzing entrepreneurial identity. By modeling resource mobilization as a two-sided matching process with identity as a connecting construct, it provides a more complete and nuanced view of the mechanisms that facilitate resource acquisition in entrepreneurship.
