Being Watched

Being Watched PDF Author: Carrie Lambert-Beatty
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262516071
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 383

Book Description
How Yvonne Rainer's art shaped new ways of watching as well as performing; how it connected 1960s avant-garde art to politics and activism. In her dance and performances of the 1960s, Yvonne Rainer famously transformed the performing body—stripped it of special techniques and star status, traded its costumes and leotards for T-shirts and sneakers, asked it to haul mattresses or recite texts rather than leap or spin. Without discounting these innovations, Carrie Lambert-Beatty argues in Being Watched that the crucial site of Rainer's interventions in the 1960s was less the body of the performer than the eye of the viewer—or rather, the body as offered to the eye. Rainer's art, Lambert-Beatty writes, is structured by a peculiar tension between the body and its display. Through close readings of Rainer's works of the 1960s—from the often-discussed dance Trio A to lesser-known Vietnam war-era protest dances—Lambert-Beatty explores how these performances embodied what Rainer called “the seeing difficulty.” (As Rainer said: “Dance is hard to see.”) Viewed from this perspective, Rainer's work becomes a bridge between key episodes in postwar art. Lambert-Beatty shows how Rainer's art (and related performance work in Happenings, Fluxus, and Judson Dance Theater) connects with the transformation of the subject-object relation in minimalism and with emerging feminist discourse on the political implications of the objectifying gaze. In a spectacle-soaked era, moreover—when images of war played nightly on the television news—Rainer's work engaged the habits of viewing formed in mass-media America, linking avant-garde art and the wider culture of the 1960s. Rainer is significant, argues Lambert-Beatty, not only as a choreographer, but as a sculptor of spectatorship.

Liliana Porter and the Art of Simulation

Liliana Porter and the Art of Simulation PDF Author: Florencia Bazzano-Nelson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351560115
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 185

Book Description
Visually appealing, conceptually startling, and intellectually engaging-these phrases aptly describe the art of Liliana Porter. Florencia Bazzano-Nelson's study focuses on the principal theme in the Argentine-born artist's work since the 1970s: her playful but subversive dismantling of the limits that separate everyday reality from the world of illusion and simulacra. Over the years, Porter's own evolving interest in perception lead the author to explore a series of interconnected and timely issues in her artistic production, such as the representative function of art, the structural links between art and language, and the witty re-signification of the art-historical images and mass-produced kitsch figurines she has so often featured in her art. Strongly founded in critical theory, Bazzano-Nelson's approach considers Porter's art as the site of conceptually exciting dialogues with Jorge Luis Borges, Ren?agritte, Michel Foucault, and Jean Baudrillard. Her carefully crafted interdisciplinary analysis not only combines art-historical, literary, and theoretical perspectives but also addresses the artist's work in different media, such as printmaking, conceptual art, photography, and film.

The Language of Dying

The Language of Dying PDF Author: Sarah Pinborough
Publisher: Jo Fletcher Books
ISBN: 1681444348
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 91

Book Description
In this emotionally gripping, genre-defying novella from Sarah Pinborough, a woman sits at her father's bedside, watching the clock tick away the last hours of his life. Her brothers and sisters--she is the middle child of five--have all turned up over the past week to pay their last respects. Each is traumatized in his or her own way, and the bonds that unite them to each other are fragile--as fragile perhaps as the old man's health. With her siblings all gone, back to their self-obsessed lives, she is now alone with the faltering wreck of her father's cancer-ridden body. It is always at times like this when it--the dark and nameless, the impossible, presence that lingers along the fringes of the dark fields beyond the house--comes calling. As the clock ticks away in the darkness, she can only wait for it to find her, a reunion she both dreads and aches for...

José Parlá

José Parlá PDF Author: José Parlá
Publisher: Damiani Limited
ISBN: 9788862085632
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 96

Book Description
Based on an exhibition at SCAD Museum of Art presents the artist's relationships to the rich contexts of cities he's visited and the experiences that shaped his practice. Grounded in Parl's personal first generation Cuban American immigrant family story and an ever-evolving practice that concerns elsewhere communities and their contribution to America, Roots offers a new visual relationship with its pictorially contemplative environment to consider connections between local history, one's past, present, and the future; to imagine or ever create one's own universal truth and personal harmony now more than ever. Parl produces a gestural landscape with juxtaposed characters, hieroglyphs and words within both paintings and sculptures that are deliberately created to serve as a carrier of meaning. The titles of his works often create playful connotations as signifiers to specific places or times, thus becoming a key element to decode the work. Parl's grandfather was an aviation pioneer who flew between Key West and Mariel, Cuba on a bi-plane made of sugarcane and bamboo, which he named Caa Brava . The Cuban aviator's legacy continues to serve as an inspiration to the artist and his family. Parl spent his formative years immersed in the thriving underground art scenes of Miami, while traveling often to other cities like: Beijing, Havana, Istanbul, New York, Paris, Sydney, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, London, and San Juan, amongst many other countries where the multicultural environment and social processes deeply impacted his perception of urban space. In his practice, like his grandfather's flight between the U.S and Cuba in 1912, Jos Parl highlights the cultural bonds between communities and the expression thereof.
