Book Description
75 years ago, Americans and the Allied forces around the globe cheered, cried, and danced with relief to celebrate the surrender of Japan and the end of World War II, the most devastating conflict in human history. But as this special edition from LIFE demonstrates in vivid detail, the road to Allied victory in the Pacific and the subsequent end to the war was tortuous and fraught with uncertainty: from the crushing blow of Pearl Harbor, through savage bloodbaths at sea and on teeming jungle islands, and culminating with an apocalyptic weapon that still casts a shadow over humanity. Told through the vivid photography that defines LIFE and accompanying text, LIFE The Road to VJ Day reminds readers of the sacrifices made decades ago, and how they still resonate today.

Life Is Now!

Life Is Now! PDF Author: John Eaton
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1465302603
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 368

Book Description
This story of The Author's unconventional lifestyle gives valuable lessons to the many people who leave school and University with no plans for their careers, and are just content to be buffetted along life's highways, waiting for the miracle which will never happen. For the many people who have probably wasted their time at school and University, it is never too late to take charge of their life by positive thinking. Henry Ford was 40 years old when he formed the Ford Motor Company. John Eaton was 26 years old when he decided to throw off the shackles of a comfortable and conventional career as a Design Engineer and ventured into the world of Show Business by opening up a closed down Dance hall. The newfound exctasy of being in charge of his own destiny drove him on to success in other business ventures and a period on the fringes of The Political Scene where he came into contact with Members Of The Cabinet. In addition, the detailed descriptions of life during his childhood provide an intriguing insight into a way of life which has now become history and will fascinate readers who are accustomed to everyday use of Telephones, TVs, Computers and Motor Vehicles. The lessons learned by The Author about the complexities of human nature, as he navigated through The University Of Life, are well illustrated and invaluable to the reader who wants to "Make Life Happen" rather than let it wash over him. If this book can upgrade the chances of success in a career or improve the quality of life of a reader, then his work will not have been in vain.

The Kissing Sailor

The Kissing Sailor PDF Author: Lawrence Verria
Publisher: Naval Institute Press
ISBN: 1612511279
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
On August 14, 1945, Alfred Eisenstaedt took a picture of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square, minutes after they heard of Japan’s surrender to the United States. Two weeks later LIFE magazine published that image. It became one of the most famous WWII photographs in history (and the most celebrated photograph ever published in the world’s dominant photo-journal), a cherished reminder of what it felt like for the war to finally be over. Everyone who saw the picture wanted to know more about the nurse and sailor, but Eisenstaedt had no information and a search for the mysterious couple’s identity took on a dimension of its own. In 1979 Eisenstaedt thought he had found the long lost nurse. And as far as almost everyone could determine, he had. For the next thirty years Edith Shain was known as the woman in the photo of V-J Day, 1945, Times Square. In 1980 LIFE attempted to determine the sailor’s identity. Many aging warriors stepped forward with claims, and experts weighed in to support one candidate over another. Chaos ensued. For almost two decades Lawrence Verria and George Galdorisi were intrigued by the controversy surrounding the identity of the two principals in Eisenstaedt’s most famous photograph and collected evidence that began to shed light on this mystery. Unraveling years of misinformation and controversy, their findings propelled one claimant’s case far ahead of the others and, at the same time, dethroned the supposed kissed nurse when another candidate’s claim proved more credible. With this book, the authors solve the 67-year-old mystery by providing irrefutable proof to identify the couple in Eisenstaedt’s photo. It is the first time the whole truth behind the celebrated picture has been revealed. The authors also bring to light the couple’s and the photographer’s brushes with death that nearly prevented their famous spontaneous Times Square meeting in the first place. The sailor, part of Bull Halsey’s famous task force, survived the deadly typhoon that took the lives of hundreds of other sailors. The nurse, an Austrian Jew who lost her mother and father in the Holocaust, barely managed to escape to the United States. Eisenstaedt, a World War I German soldier, was nearly killed at Flanders.

The Ultimate Battle

The Ultimate Battle PDF Author: Bill Sloan
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1416553118
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 418

Book Description
The Ultimate Battle is the full story of the last great clash of World War II as it has never before been told. With the same “grunt's-eye-view” narrative style that distinguished his Brotherhood of Heroes, Bill Sloan presents a gripping and uniquely personal saga of heroism and sacrifice in which at least 115,000 soldiers, sailors, and airmen from both sides were killed, as were nearly 150,000 civilians caught in the crossfire or encouraged to commit suicide by Japanese troops. It is a story set against a panorama of more than 1,500 American ships, nearly two thousand Japanese kamikazes sworn to sink those ships, and two huge armies locked in a no-quarter struggle to the death—the 541,000 GIs and Marines of the U.S. Tenth Army, and Japan's 110,000-man 32nd Army. Woven into the broader narrative are the personal stories of men who endured this epic battle and were interviewed by the author. In many cases, their experiences are told here in print for the first time. Much of the action in The Ultimate Battle unfolds among men pinned down under relentless fire on disputed hillsides, in the ruins of shell-blasted villages, and inside stricken tanks and armored cars. Sloan also takes readers aboard flaming ships and into the cockpits of night-fighter aircraft to capture the horror and heroism of men and vessels besieged by kamikazes. The Ultimate Battle is a searing and unforgettable recreation of the Okinawa campaign as it was experienced by men who were there. It is filled with fresh insights that only those men can provide.

Life in Post-War Britain

Life in Post-War Britain PDF Author: Anton Rippon
Publisher: Pen and Sword History
ISBN: 1399064797
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
On New Year’s Day 1946, the people of Britain desperately wanted to look forward to a new and better life. The Second World War had ended four months earlier with the formal surrender of Imperial Japan. The war in Europe had been over for eight months. But, upon announcing to Parliament the German surrender, Winston Churchill had told the nation: “Let us not forget the toils and efforts that lie ahead.” In 1946, Clement Attlee, leader of the newly elected Labour Government, underlined Churchill’s words, warning the nation that victory over Nazi Germany and Japan had heralded not a future of plenty – but one of greater austerity. The huge debt left by the war had crippled the British economy. Those who fought in the Great War had been promised a land fit for heroes. That had not happened. After another world war, people now expected a better life than the poverty and hardship that had characterised much of the 1920s and 1930s, and Attlee pledged to end society’s five “Giant Evils” – squalor, ignorance, want, idleness, and disease – and to provide for the people “from the cradle to the grave”. It was going to be far from easy. Life in Post-War Britain: "Toils and Efforts Ahead" tells what it was like to live in Britain as the nation battled to recover while still facing many hardships, including food rationing that, ironically, was to become more severe than that in wartime. This was a unique time in British history and Life in Post-War Britain: “Toils and Efforts Ahead” captures the mood of the nation, examining all the great events of the post-war years and the effect that they had on the everyday life of the people who had won a war but who now faced an uncertain peace both at home and abroad.
