Language, Meaning, Interpretation

Language, Meaning, Interpretation PDF Author: Guttorm Fløistad
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 140202195X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 243

Book Description
Philosophy of logic and language, and of meaning and communication are central to this volume. The discussion of these issues involves analytical approaches, including semantics and semiotics, philosophy of science, mathematical logic, phenomenology, hermeneutics and some aspects of philosophical anthropology and aesthetics. Philosophy of the Absolute also belongs to this broad repertoire of philosophical problems and disciplines. A number of problems and viewpoints derive from the metaphysical system; any relativistic view on ethical values, for instance, makes sense in relation to some absolute. Metaphysical system building may have come to an end, but after all it belongs to philosophy to remind us of our past.

Conceptions of Time in Greek and Roman Antiquity

Conceptions of Time in Greek and Roman Antiquity PDF Author: Richard Faure
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110736071
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
This collection of articles is an important milestone in the history of the study of time conceptions in Greek and Roman Antiquity. It spans from Homer to Neoplatonism. Conceptions of time are considered from different points of view and sources. Reflections on time were both central and various throughout the history of ancient philosophy. Time was a topic, but also material for poets, historians and doctors. Importantly, the contributions also explore implicit conceptions and how language influences our thought categories.

Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444535829
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 323

Book Description
The bulk of this volume consists of invited addresses presented at the Colloquium. These contributions report on recent or ongoing research in some of the mainstream areas of mathematical logic: model theory, both pure and in its applications (to group theory and real algebraic geometry); and proof theory, applied to set theory and diophantine equations. The major novel aspect of the book is the important place accorded to the connections of mathematical logic with the neighboring disciplines: mathematical foundations of computer science, and philosophy of mathematics.

The Unity of Plato's Sophist

The Unity of Plato's Sophist PDF Author: Noburu Notomi
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521632591
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 368

Book Description
Plato's later dialogue, the Sophist, is deemed one of the greatest works in the history of philosophy, but scholars have been shy of confronting the central problem of the dialogue. For Plato, defining the sophist is the basic philosophical problem: any inquirer must face the 'sophist within us' in order to secure the very possibility of dialogue, and of philosophy, against sophistic counterattack. Examining the connection between the large and difficult philosophical issues discussed in the Sophist (appearance, image, falsehood, and 'what is not') in relation to the basic problem of defining the sophist, Dr Notomi shows how Plato struggles with and solves all these problems in a single line of inquiry. His interpretation of the whole dialogue finally reveals how the philosopher should differ from the sophist.

La mesure de l’être

La mesure de l’être PDF Author: Sylvain Roudaut
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004501894
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 443

Book Description
The aim of this book is to analyze the problem of the intensity of forms in the late Middle Ages and to show how this debate eventually gave rise to a new metaphysical project in the 14th century: the project of quantifying the different types of perfections existing in the universe – that is the project of “measuring being”.
