Focusing on the period between the revolutions of 1848-1849 and the First Vatican Council (1869-1870), The Public Image of Eastern Orthodoxy explores the circumstances under which westerners, concerned about the fate of the papacy, the Ottoman Empire, Poland, and Russian imperial power, began to conflate the Russian Orthodox Church with the state and to portray the Church as the political tool of despotic tsars. As Heather L. Bailey demonstrates, in response to this reductionist view, Russian Orthodox publicists launched a public relations campaign in the West, especially in France, in the 1850s and 1860s. The linchpin of their campaign was the building of the impressive Saint Alexander Nevsky Church in Paris, consecrated in 1861. Bailey posits that, as the embodiment of the belief that Russia had a great historical purpose inextricably tied to Orthodoxy, the Paris church both reflected and contributed to the rise of religious nationalism in Russia that followed the Crimean War. At the same time, the confrontation with westerners' negative ideas about the Eastern Church fueled a reformist spirit in Russia while contributing to a better understanding of Eastern Orthodoxy in the West.

"The global expansion of France during the nineteenth century is one of the most significant phenomena in modern French history. It was animated by an official creed, referred to as the "mission civilisatrice " or "mission to civilize," that established boundaries for what the French government would and would not do in the colonies. At the same time that the French empire was expanding, a religious revival was underway. It spawned a Catholic missionary movement that made France the most significant missionary-sending nation of the nineteenth century. Despite the magnitude of this movement, no studies have been made of the specifically Catholic interpretation of and contribution to the French doctrine of colonial expansion--the "mission to civilize." This study attempts to connect the missionary revival with French colonial expansion by focusing upon the issue that first bound together the religious and political conceptions of France's modern mission abroad--slavery--in the places where debate over its abolition was the locus of social and cultural contention: the colonies of Guadeloupe, Guyane, Martinique, Reunion (Bourbon until 1848), and Senegal from 1815 to 1852. ...The Catholic "mission to moralize" among the slaves of the French colonies created an interdependance with the French government so that the national "mission to civilize" ultimately borrowed much of its content from its religious counterpart."--Abstract.

No period in American Catholic history has attracted as much scholarly interest in recent years as the last third of the nineteenth century, when the Church underwent a series of internal conflicts over issues that were various, specific, but somehow interlocking. Catholic leaders quarreled about such matters as the propriety of interfaith meetings, the condemnation of secret societies, the tempo of Americanization, the creation of a Catholic university, and the relation between parochial and public education. In spite of the intensive study these issues have received, their significance has been hard to grasp. The monographs have treated them as tactical controversies and have so stressed the underlying doctrinal unity among American Catholics that the bases of disagreement have never come fully into view. The present book, a Harvard doctoral dissertation, takes the clash of opinion seriously. By ranging more widely than anyone else has done through the published writings of late nineteenth-century Catholics, Dr. Cross has defined the social and even theological attitudes that distinguished a liberal from a conservative style of Catholicism.
