Apart from a large number of miscellaneous accounts, mainly belonging to the seventeenth century, they include fragments of Port Books of about 1580-90 (in Nos. 1 fragments of Examinations and Depositions, chiefly of about 1690 (in Nos. 1, 2, 5 and twenty-three Stockwell letters (in Nos. 4, 5 and a bundle of Oliver Lambert letters - early seventeenth century - (in no. A few miscellaneous letters of 1605-50 (in Nos. 1 some letters and papers of about 1750 (in No. And finally, eight legal documents in Latin (in Nos. 1 One of these, from the reign of Edward III, is abstracted on p. 63 of the Report - last paragraph but two; another appears as No. 4 of the present collection; the rest belong to the reign of James I. Though the letters in this volume range over as much as two centuries, a very large proportion of them, 108 out of 145, belong to one of four quite short periods, 1458-9, 1470-2, 1549-50 and 1587-90. Of all the activities of the most neglected century in English History, England's trade has received the least attention in proportion to its importance. It was obviously in the course of the later Middle Ages, and more particularly in the fifteenth century, that there took place the great transformation from medieval England, isolated and intensely local, to the England of the Tudor and Stuart age, with its world-wide connections and imperial designs. It was during the same period that most of the forms of international trade characteristic of the Middle Ages were replaced by new methods of commercial organization and regulation, national in scope and at times definitely nationalistic in object, and that a marked movement towards capitalist methods and principles took place in the sphere of domestic trade. Yet little has been written concerning English trade in this period. First published in 1933, this classic volume goes a long way to fills this gap superbly. This book surveys the history of the bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey in the late medieval and early modern periods, focusing on political, social and religious history. The islands' regular tangential appearance in histories ofEngland and the British Isles has long suggested the need for a more systematic account from the perspective of the islands themselves. Jersey and Guernsey were at the forefront of attempts by the English kings in the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries to maintain and extend their dominions in France. During the Wars of the Roses and the early Tudor period, they were frequently the refuge for claimants and plotters. Throughout the Reformation, they were a leading centre of Presbyterianism. Later, they were strategically important during the continental wars of Elizabeth's reign. The book charts all these events in a comprehensive way. In addition, it shows how the islands' relationship with central power in England varied but never saw a simple subjection to centralised uniform authority, how Jersey and Guernsey maintained links with Normandy, Brittany and France more widely, and how politics, religion, society and culture developed in the islands themselves.
