Book Description
Excerpt from The Letters of Horace Walpole, Fourth Earl of Orford, Vol. 15 of 16: Chronologically Arranged and Edited With Notes and Indices; With Portraits and Facsimiles; 1791-1797 I see with pleasure that the Convention and the J acobins have been breaking, though'perhaps patched together again for the present. It will break out again. The former are wofully uneasy. They complain of factions everywhere, though trying to conceal their disasters by boasting of Victories but they display their wants and their deficits lament the loss of their commerce and manufactures which themselves have destroyed. They tremble at the crowds in Paris, and wish to thin them; are sick of anarchy; but their efforts to disperse the former, and to lessen the latter, will disperse the dissatisfaction through the pro vinces, and augment the latter. It is plain they fear not being able to retain the capital in obedience; and if they fail there, who is to, govern the armies These grievances will, I think, produce a civil war, or some kind of counter revolution. So be it! Neither. Will settle the country soon, nor is it to be wished it should be. It will require time to amend Frenchmen or Frenchwomen, were the task possible. Book Description
Excerpt from Private Correspondence of Horace Walpole, Earl of Orford, Vol. 2 of 4: Now First Collected; 1756 1764 I always dedicate my travels to you. My prea sent expedition has been very amusing: sights are thick sown in the counties of York and Notting. Ham: the former is more historic, and the great lords live at a prouder distance: in Nottingham shire there is a very heptarchy of little kingdoms elbowing one another, and the baroi'is of thein want nothing but small armies to make inroads into one another's parks, murder deer, and mas sacre park-keepers. - But to come to particulars:, The great road as far as Stamford is superb: in any other country it would furnish medals, and immortalize any drowsy monarch in whose reign it was executed. It is continued much farther, but is more rumbling. I did not st0p at Hatfield and vol. II. B. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Private Correspondence of Horace Walpole, Earl of Orford, Vol. 3 of 4: 1764 1775 You see I write in despair. I am for the whole, but perfectly tranquil. We have acted with ho nour, and have nothing to reproach. Ourselves with. We cannot combat fate. We shall be left almost alone; but I think you will no more go with the torrent than I will. Could I have fore seen this tide of ill fortune, I would have done just as I have done; and my conduct shall show I am satisfied I have done right. For the rest, come what come may, I am perfectly prepared! And while there is a free spot Of earth upon the globe; that shall be my country. I am sorry it will not be this, but to-morrow I shall be able to laugh as usual. What signifies what happens when one is seven-and-forty, as I am to-day?
