But after many attempts and long delay, I found it impracticable, and, therefore, with much hesitation and reluctance, I committed them to the press. My intention at first was mere ly tapri'at, not to publish them, hoping thus to es cape the charge of obstinacy from my friends, and that of presumption from the public; but I soon perceii'ed that the plan of private cir culation would only involve me in innumerable didie ulties, and lat length found myself com pelled to publish. Thus I am unintentionally and unexpectedly placed in a new character, that of a tourist, before the tribunal of the.
