La physique des surfaces est une science à la fois ancienne et récente. Ancienne parce que les premiers concepts ayant permis d'étudier les surfaces datent du début du XXe siècle. Récente parce que l'étude approfondie et systématique des surfaces n'a démarré qu'à partir des années 1960, pour finalement connaître un essor extrêmement important aujourd'hui, en plein règne des nanosciences. Cet ouvrage offre une large vision de la physique des surfaces solides, depuis les concepts thermodynamiques de base, jusqu'à la surface considérée comme lieu d'échange entre un cristal et son environnement. Une large part de l'ouvrage est consacrée à l'étude des propriétés spécifiques de surface ainsi qu'aux méthodes expérimentales d'étude des surfaces depuis les techniques de laboratoire les plus répandues jusqu'à celles utilisant le rayonnement synchrotron. Une attention particulière est portée aux problèmes d'épitaxie. Les approximations et modèles utilisés permettent une approche analytique claire aidant le lecteur à se faire une idée physique malgré la complexité de certains problèmes étudiés. Des exercices de difficultés variables complètent le cours. Ce livre est destiné aux étudiants de Maîtrise, de 3e cycle de physique ou de chimie de la matière condensée, et aux ingénieurs.

This open access book contains a structured collection of the complete solutions of all essential axisymmetric contact problems. Based on a systematic distinction regarding the type of contact, the regime of friction and the contact geometry, a multitude of technically relevant contact problems from mechanical engineering, the automotive industry and medical engineering are discussed. In addition to contact problems between isotropic elastic and viscoelastic media, contact problems between transversal-isotropic elastic materials and functionally graded materials are addressed, too. The optimization of the latter is a focus of current research especially in the fields of actuator technology and biomechanics. The book takes into account adhesive effects which allow access to contact-mechanical questions about micro- and nano-electromechanical systems. Solutions of the contact problems include both the relationships between the macroscopic force, displacement and contact length, as well as the stress and displacement fields at the surface and, if appropriate, within the half-space medium. Solutions are always obtained with the simplest available method - usually with the method of dimensionality reduction (MDR) or approaches which use the solution of the non-adhesive normal contact problem to solve the respective contact problem.

This book stems from a course on Micromechanics that I started about fifteen years ago at Northwestern University. At that time, micromechanics was a rather unfamiliar subject. Although I repeated the course every year, I was never convinced that my notes have quite developed into a final manuscript because new topics emerged constantly requiring revisions, and additions. I finally came to realize that if this is continued, then I will never complete the book to my total satisfaction. Meanwhile, T. Mori and I had coauthored a book in Japanese, entitled Micromechanics, published by Baifu-kan, Tokyo, in 1975. It received an extremely favorable response from students and re searchers in Japan. This encouraged me to go ahead and publish my course notes in their latest version, as this book, which contains further development of the subject and is more comprehensive than the one published in Japanese. Micromechanics encompasses mechanics related to microstructures of materials. The method employed is a continuum theory of elasticity yet its applications cover a broad area relating to the mechanical behavior of materi als: plasticity, fracture and fatigue, constitutive equations, composite materi als, polycrystals, etc. These subjects are treated in this book by means of a powerful and unified method which is called the 'eigenstrain method. ' In particular, problems relating to inclusions and dislocations are most effectively analyzed by this method, and therefore, special emphasis is placed on these topics.

L.A. Galin’s book on contact problems is a remarkable work. Actually there are two books: the first, published in 1953 deals with contact problems in the classical theory of elasticity; this is the one that was translated into English in 1961. The second book, published in 1980, included the first, and then had new sections on contact problems for viscoelastic materials, and rough contact problems; this section has not previously been translated into English. In this new translation, the original text and the mathematical analysis have been completely revised, new material has been added, and the material appearing in the 1980 Russian translation has been completely rewritten. In addition there are three essays by students of Galin, bringing the analysis up to date.
