L'archipel des Comores, habité vraisemblablement dès l'Antiquité et découvert par les navigateurs et marchands européens à partir du XVIe siècle, est composé de quatre îles principales dont les habitants forment un peuple. Du XVIe au XIXe siècle, son organisation politique est le Sultanat médiéval, qui ne remet pas en cause son unité. Mais Mayotte est passée sous souveraineté française en 1843, comme l'ensemble des Comores en 1912. Au lendemain de leur indépendance le 6 juillet 1975, les Comores revivent la même scission. Mayotte demeure française et, à partir de 1978, l'État comorien est sous influence française. Ce travail souhaite montrer comment un petit pays, les Comores, formant un seul peuple, a été scindé par une puissante nation pour ses propres intérêts.
