Des scores électoraux étonnants à l'issue de plusieurs élections régionales et européennes, un candidat à l'élection présidentielle de 2002, plus de 400 candidats aux élections législatives suivantes : depuis sa création en 1989, le mouvement Chasse Pêche Nature et Traditions a souvent défrayé la chronique. Cet ouvrage se propose de restituer l'histoire de ce mouvement atypique dans toute sa complexité. Il démontre plus particulièrement à quel point la mobilisation des chasseurs autour de CPNT ne peut être dissociée de l'activisme des porte-parole de la cause animale. L'auteur met en exergue la nécessité d'interroger les ressorts sociologiques des conflits qui opposent ces deux groupes de militants aux conceptions des plus divergentes. Il examine ainsi l'impact des transformations des usages de la " Nature " mais aussi de l'évolution des rapports à l'animal, ou bien encore de l'aversion face à la mort. L'étude relève également tout ce que ces différends doivent aux instances européennes, mais aussi à l'enrôlement des média, des expertises scientifiques et du droit. Au fil d'une analyse qui privilégie une perspective dynamique, les conflits étudiés se révèlent d'autant plus aigus que les protagonistes en présence en appellent à des arènes, à des ressources et à des conceptions de l'ordre démocratique concurrentes. Autant dire que, bien au-delà des seules questions relatives à la chasse, l'ouvrage permet d'interroger les logiques qui soustendent aujourd'hui les mutations des rapports à la politique.

European social movements have been central to European history, politics, society and culture, and have had a global reach and impact. Yet they have rarely been taken on their own terms in the English-language literature, considered rather as counterpoints to the US experience.
