In 1962, the Commonwealth Immigrants Act hastened the process of South Asian migration to postcolonial Britain. Half a decade later, now is an opportune moment to revisit the accumulated writing about the diasporas formed through subsequent settlement, and to probe the ways in which the South Asian diaspora can be re-conceptualised. Writing the City in British Asian Diasporas takes a fresh look at such matters and will have multi-disciplinary resonance worldwide. The meaning and importance of local, multi-local and trans-local dynamics is explored through a devolved and regionally-accented comparison of five British Asian cities: Bradford, the East End of London, Manchester, Leicester and Birmingham. Analysing the ‘writing’ of these differently configured cities since the 1960s, its main focus is the significant discrepancies in representation between differently-positioned texts reflecting both dominant institutional discourses and everyday lived experiences of a locality. Part I offers a comprehensive, yet still highly contested, reading of each city’s archives. This book explores some of disco’s other lives which thrived between the 1970s and the 1980s, from oil-boom Nigeria to socialist Czechoslovakia, from post-colonial India to war-torn Lebanon. It charts the translation of disco as a cultural form into musical, geo-political, ideological and sociological landscapes that fall outside of its original conditions of production and reception, capturing the variety of scenes, contexts and reasons for which disco took on diverse dimensions in its global journey. With its deep repercussions in visual culture, gender politics, and successive forms of popular music, art, fashion and style, disco as a musical genre and dance culture is exemplary of how a subversive, marginal scene – that of queer and Black New York undergrounds in the early 1970s – turned into a mainstream cultural industry. Transnational Socialist Networks in the 1970s argues that western European socialist parties' transnational cooperation across national borders significantly influenced politics and policy-making in what was the European Communities (EC). It focuses on the network-like informal structures that characterised transnational cooperation between the party members and leaders of different socialist parties involved in European affairs. Taking the example of two case studies, namely EC development aid policy and EC southern enlargement policy, the book demonstrates that the socialist parties strengthened their informal transnational network structures for the purposes of debating ideological and programmatic issues and finding policy solutions to common challenges in both policy fields. Moreover, it shows that the networks developed various functions to influence European governance. Against this background, the analysis in this book makes not only a significant contribution to the study of transnational networks of western European socialist parties and the history of European integration, but also adds to the understanding of the role of transnational networks in European politics and policy-making.

Gary Lineker is a former English professional footballer who spent most of his career playing as a striker for Leicester City, Everton, Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur, and Nagoya Grampus Eight. Born in Leicester in 1960, Lineker started his football career at the age of 16 when he joined his hometown club Leicester City. He quickly rose through the ranks, making his first-team debut in 1979 and scoring his first goal in the same match. Over the next few years, Lineker established himself as one of Leicester's most talented players and was eventually named their player of the year in 1983. After a successful season with Leicester, Lineker was sold to Everton for a then-British transfer record fee of £800,000. He performed outstandingly for Everton, leading the team to win the FA Cup in 1984 and to become the league's top scorer in the following season. After three seasons at Everton, Lineker was sold to Barcelona where he continued his impressive goal-scoring form, scoring 42 goals in 103 appearances. In 1989, Lineker returned to England to join Tottenham Hotspur where he remained until his retirement in 1994. Apart from his successful club career, Lineker also had a glittering international career with the England national team, scoring 48 goals in 80 appearances. After retiring from football, Lineker has worked as a television presenter and pundit.
