Hereditary Tyrosinemia

Hereditary Tyrosinemia PDF Author: Robert M. Tanguay
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319557807
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 247

Book Description
Hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 (HT1), the most severe inborn error of the tyrosine degradation pathway, is due to a deficiency in fumarylacetoacetate hydrolase (FAH). The worldwide frequency of HT1 is one per 100,000 births, but some regions have a significantly higher incidence (1:1,800). The FAH defect results in the accumulation of toxic metabolites, mainly in the liver. If left untreated, HT1 is usually fatal before the age of two. HT1 patients develop several chronic complications including cirrhosis with a high risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and neuropsychological impairment. Treatment comprises an inhibitor of the pathway, Nitisinone, a strict dietary treatment or liver transplantation. Early treatment is important to avoid HCC. The book includes the latest developments on the molecular basis of HT1, its pathology, screening and diagnosis and management of the disease written by leading scientists, geneticists, hepatologists and clinicians in the field.

Contact in the 16th Century

Contact in the 16th Century PDF Author: Brad Loewen
Publisher: University of Ottawa Press
ISBN: 0776623613
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
From Labrador to Lake Ontario, the Gulf of Saint Lawrence to French Acadia, and Huronia-Wendaki to Tadoussac, and from one chapter to the next, this scholarly collection of archaeological findings focuses on 16th century European goods found in Native contexts and within greater networks, forming a conceptual interplay of place and mobility. The four initial chapters are set around the Gulf of Saint Lawrence where Euro-Native contact was direct and the historical record is strongest. Contact networks radiated northward into Inuit settings where European iron nails, roofing tile fragments and ceramics are found. Glass beads are scarce on Inuit sites as well as on Basque sites on the Gulf’s north shore, but they are numerous in French Acadia. Ceramics on northern Basque sites are mostly from Spain. An historical review discusses the partnership between Spanish Basques and Saint Lawrence Iroquoians c.1540-1580. The four chapters set in the Saint Lawrence valley show Tadoussac as a fork in inland networks. Saint Lawrence Iroquoians obtained glass beads around Tadoussac before 1580. Algonquin from Lac Saint-Jean began trading at Tadoussac after that. They plied a northern route that linked to Huronia-Wendaki via the Ottawa Valley and the Frontenac Uplands. Finally, four chapters set around Lake Ontario focus on contact between this region and the Saint Lawrence valley. Huron-Wendat sites around the Kawartha Lakes show an influx of Saint Lawrence trade in the 16th century, followed by an immigration wave about 1580. Huron-Wendat sites near Toronto show an unabated inflow of Native materials from the Saint Lawrence valley; however, neutral sites west of Lake Ontario show Native and European materials arriving from the south. A review of glass bead evidence presented by various authors shows trends that cut across chapters and bring new impetus to the study of beads to discover 16th-century networks among French and Basque fishers, Inuit and Algonquian foragers and Iroquoian farmers. With contributions from Saraí Barreiro, Meghan Burchell, Claude Chapdelaine, Martin S. Cooper, Amanda Crompton, Vincent Delmas, Sergio Escribano-Ruiz, William Fox, Sarah Grant, François Guindon, Erik Langevin, Brad Loewen, Jean-François Moreau, Jean-Luc Pilon, Michel Plourde, Peter Ramsden, Lisa Rankin and Ronald F. Williamson.

Le province de Quebec

Le province de Quebec PDF Author: André Beaulieu
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1442633425
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 639

Book Description
There is no doubt that local and regional history, considered by many as a kind of minor historical study, has a pressing need for a systematic inventory of its resources. This collection shows the durability, the vividness, and the astonishing productivity of a sector of history which is the stronghold of the history-lover rather than the professional historian. The nature and content of each book determines its selection. For each book included, the compilers have weighed its contribution to local history and regional history rather than the style in which it is written—narrative, memoir, descriptive study, or novel. It is this criterion of selection that has permitted the retention of several general histories of a varied nature—Bouchette, Charlevoix, Nicholas Denys, La Potherie, Lescarbot, Hanotaux, Sulte, etc.— where local and regional life takes on a major importance for reasons of order in history, method, or quite simply because local life is the principal object of the study itself. The editors have also retained certain works—those of George W. Brown, Arthur Buies, George M. Grant, Blodwen Davies, etc.—because they are primarily descriptive and contain numerous elements in which local history blends with the manners and customs of the inhabitants of certain regions. This bibliography is designed primarily for historiographers who have until now paid little attention to local, regional, or parochial history. It will also be invaluable for librarians who suffer from the numerous difficulties involved in the classification of such works. Since 1950, all works published in Canada are, by virtue of the book deposit law, provided to the National Library of Canada, and recorded in Canadiana.
