Le Plan d'action international sur la peche illicite est compatible avec le Code de conduite de la FAO pour une peche responsable, comme avec l'Accord visant a favoriser le respect par les navires pechant en haute mer des mesures internationales de conservation et de gestion, l'Accord de 1995 relatif a l'application des dispositions de la Convention des Nations Unies sur le droit de la mer du 10 decembre 1982 relatives a la conservation et a la gestion des stocks de poissons dont les deplacements s'effectuent tant a l'interieur qu'au-dela des zones economiques exclusives (stocks chevauchants) et des stocks de poissons grands migrateurs, et divers instruments du droit international. Les directives sont concues pour fournir des indications generales et definir un cadre pour l'elaboration et la mise en oeuvre des plans d'action nationaux."
