Speak the Truth, Laughing

Speak the Truth, Laughing PDF Author: Rose Zwi
Publisher: Spinifex Press
ISBN: 9781876756215
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
The characters in these eleven stories range from a political activist, in the apartheid years, released from a South African jail into a seemingly uncaring world, to a child of immigrant parents living between two cultures; from the daughter of a tribal chief who returns from the city to her arid homeland in the heart of Africa, to the tragic love of a Rabbi and his wife in an East European shelter; from a dingo pursued to its inevitable end by the people of a small Australian town, to a South African farmer who allows his land to revert to its natural state. In her struggle to arrive at the truth of a situation, Rose Zwi's stories are leavened with humour and humanity. In the story which gives the name to this collection 'To Speak the Truth, Laughing', a politically inexperienced white woman joins an illegal march into a black township to protest against the arrest of black schoolchildren who have rebelled against the system. In another story, 'Conquest of America', a writer arrives in New York in search of a literary agent. Her present agent has axed her. "You must know lots of people in New York," he says as he bundles her into a taxi with her dog-eared manuscripts. "Not a soul," she replies. "Lovely," he says in a distracted manner. "Let's have coffee sometime." International award-winning author Rose Zwi has penned a joyous collection of stories bringing together Australian and South African lives.

The Laughing Monsters

The Laughing Monsters PDF Author: Denis Johnson
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux
ISBN: 0374709238
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
Denis Johnson's New York Times bestseller, The Laughing Monsters, is a high-suspense tale of kaleidoscoping loyalties in the post-9/11 world that shows one of our great novelists at the top of his game. Roland Nair calls himself Scandinavian but travels on a U.S. passport. After ten years' absence, he returns to Freetown, Sierra Leone, to reunite with his friend Michael Adriko. They once made a lot of money here during the country's civil war, and, curious to see whether good luck will strike twice in the same place, Nair has allowed himself to be drawn back to a region he considers hopeless. Adriko is an African who styles himself a soldier of fortune and who claims to have served, at various times, the Ghanaian army, the Kuwaiti Emiri Guard, and the American Green Berets. He's probably broke now, but he remains, at thirty-six, as stirred by his own doubtful schemes as he was a decade ago. Although Nair believes some kind of money-making plan lies at the back of it all, Adriko's stated reason for inviting his friend to Freetown is for Nair to meet Adriko's fiancée, a grad student from Colorado named Davidia. Together the three set out to visit Adriko's clan in the Uganda-Congo borderland—but each of these travelers is keeping secrets from the others. Their journey through a land abandoned by the future leads Nair, Adriko, and Davidia to meet themselves not in a new light, but rather in a new darkness.

Ethical Consensus and the Truth of Laughter

Ethical Consensus and the Truth of Laughter PDF Author: Hub Zwart
Publisher: Peeters Publishers
ISBN: 9789039004128
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
We participate in moral debate, instead of taking established morality for granted, because of our discontent with the moral discourse already existing. We feel that something is distorted or concealed, that something remains to be said. One of the strategies to expose the deficiencies of established discourse is critical argument, but under certain specific historical circumstances, the apparent self-evidence of established moral discourse has gained such a dominance, has acquired such an ability to conceal its basic vulnerability, that its validity simply seems beyond contestation. Notwithstanding our discontent, we remain unable to challenge the established truth effectively. Then, all of a sudden, its vulnerability is revealed - and this is the experience of laughter. Moral criticism is preceded by laughter. In fact, all crucial transformations that emerged in the history of morality were accompanied by and made possible by laughter and moral criticism is basically and originally a comic genre. After drawing an outline of the present moral regime in chapter one, the moral significance of laughter is recovered with the help of four 'philosophers of laughter' in chapter two, namely Bakhtin, Nietzsche, Bataille and Foucault. Laughter allows reality to appear in a certain light, it contains a basic truth, it is a philosophical principle in its own right that cannot be reduced to or identified with the truth of science. In the subsequent chapters it is shown how three crucial moral transformations, occuring in the fourth century B.C., the sixteenth century A.D. and the nineteenth century A.D. evolved out of an experience of laughter, articulated by three outstanding protagonists of laughter presented in this book: Socrates, Luther and Ibsen. Finally, the significance of the experience of laughter in view of the present is discussed.

In the Event of Laughter

In the Event of Laughter PDF Author: Alfie Bown
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1501342622
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 165

Book Description
Using Lacanian psychoanalysis, as well as its pre-history and afterlives, In the Event of Laughter argues for a new framework for discussing laughter. Responding to a tradition of 'comedy studies' that has been interested only in the causes of laughter (in why we laugh), it proposes a different relationship between laughter and causality. Ultimately it argues that laughter is both cause and effect, troubling chronological time and asking for a more nuanced way of conceiving the relationship between subjects and their laughter than existing theories have accounted for. Making this visible via psychoanalytic ideas of retroactivity, Alfie Bown explores how laughter – far from being a mere response to a stimulus – changes the relationship between the present, the past and the future. Bown investigates this hypothesis in relation to a range of comic texts from the 'history of laughter,' discussing Chaucer, Shakespeare, Kafka and Chaplin, as well as lesser-known but vital figures from the comic genre.

Joy and Laughter in Nietzsche’s Philosophy

Joy and Laughter in Nietzsche’s Philosophy PDF Author: Paul E. Kirkland
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350225258
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
Analyzing the importance of joy, laughter, and cheerfulness in Nietzsche's thought, this volume addresses an under-examined topic in the secondary literature. By exploring disparate aspects of these interrelated emotions it provides new insights into his key ideas. The contributors-among them philosophers and political scientists-illustrate the significance of these feelings to reveal political ramifications of their affirmative potential and their broader role in Nietzsche's philosophical aims. These include how the joyful disposition Nietzsche commends informs his free spirit's self-overcoming, attempts to revalue all values, and prospects of ultimately transfiguring humanity. Among other topics, scholars assess the Übermensch and shared joy, learning to laugh at oneself, Schopenhauer's jokes, Pascal's cheerfulness, and the Dada movement's subversively playful aesthetic. By contemplating Nietzsche's emphasis on joy and laughter, the volume reveals a thinker who, far from being a caricature of hopeless nihilism, is in fact the hitherto unrecognised champion of an alternative liberatory politics.
