Book Description
Excerpt from Later Speeches of Hon. Chauncey M. Depew, LL. D I well remember the years of the slavery discussion from '48 to '61. It began with a few Abolitionists who were regarded as anarchists. With discussion and debate, it got so far as to safeguard the institution where it existed and to prohibit its extension into the States that were to be formed out of the new territories. On that issue and the preservation of the Union we fought the Civil War and slavery was abolished and the Union was triumphant. Then came the long discus sion of reconstruction. Had the extremist prevailed the States which went into rebellion would have remained subject prov inces with a certainty of frequent revolutions. Again discussion and debate allayed passions, buried resentments, recognized that the country must live, if it lived at all, under the Consti tution of the Fathers and with a central government and sovereign States as they originated it. That settled forever the question of the Union of the States and of the powers of the Federal Government as distinguished from those of the state sovereignties. Book Description
Excerpt from Life and Later Speeches of Chauncey M. Depew He was appointed the attorney for the New York and Harlem Railroad; and in 1869, when this company was consolidated with the New York Central, and became the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Co., with Commodore Vanderbilt at its head, Mr. Depew was made the attorney of the new organization, and was afterward elected a member of its Board of Directors. As the influence of the Vanderbilts expanded, and one road after another was brought under their management, the range of his official activity steadily extended. In 1875 he was promoted to be General Counsel for the entire Vanderbilt system, and became a director in each of the seven lines which it comprised. In 1872 Mr. Depew consented to run for the Lieutenant Governorship on the Liberal Republican (Greeley) ticket, and shared what he probably had foreseen would be the fate of that party; had there been much likelihood of his election, it is quite possible that he would not have been a candidate. In 1874 he was made a Regent of the State University, and one of the Commissioners to build the costly new Capitol at Albany. Seven years later (in 1881), when Senators Conkling and Platt quarreled with President Garfield and resigned their commissions, the Republican members of the Legislature, constituting a majority of that body, met in caucus to ballot for successors to represent the Empire State in the Senate. Book Description
Excerpt from Orations and After-Dinner Speeches of Chauncey M. Depew Puritans in New England, Dutchmen in New York, Catholics in Maryland, Huguenots in South Carolina had felt the fires of persecution and were wedded to religious liberty. They had been purified in the fur nace, and in high debate and on bloody battle-fields had learned to sacrifice all material interests and to peril their lives for human rights. The principles Of constitutional government had been impressed upon them by hundreds of years of struggle, and for each principle they could point to the grave of an ancestor whose death attested the ferocity of the fight and the value of the concession wrung from arbitrary power. They knew the limitations of authority; they could pledge their lives and fortunes to resist encroachments upon their rights; but it required the lesson of Indian massacres, the invasion Of the armies of France from Canada, the tyranny of the British Crown, the seven years' war of the Revolution, and the five years of chaos of the Confederation, to evolve the idea upon which rest the power and permanency of the Republic, that liberty and union are one and inseparable.
