During the course of the next twelve years, they created nineteen projects together.During this period their projects took the form of artists' books, How To Read Music In One Evening, 1974, and Evidence, 1977; a series of a dozen outdoor billboards in the form of hand painted photographs, silkscreen posters, oil paintings and digitally printed posters, 1973-1983; a film, JPL, 1980; and an installation, Newsroom, 1983.Although they both pursued individual projects during this twelve year span they nurtured and developed an intense and focused artist collaboration. Their seminal work, Evidence has been widely recognized as a landmark photographic book.

Pictures from Home

Pictures from Home PDF Author: Larry Sultan
Publisher: Mack
ISBN: 9781910164785
Category : Families
Languages : en
Pages : 167

Book Description
First published in 1992 to wide critical acclaim, Pictures From Home is Larry Sultan's pendant to his parents. Sultan returned home to Southern California periodically in the 1980s and the decade-long sequence moves between registers, combining contemporary photographs with film stills from home movies, fragments of conversation, Sultan's own writings and other memorabilia. The result is a narrative collage in which the boundary between the documentary and the staged becomes increasingly ambiguous. Simultaneously the distance usually maintained between the photographer and his subjects also slips in an exchange of dialogue and emotion that is unique to this work. Significantly increasing the page count of the original book, this MACK design of Pictures From Home clarifies the multiplicity of voices - both textual and pictorial - in order to afford a fresh perspective of this seminal body of work -- Provided by the publisher.

Mike Mandel: Zone Eleven

Mike Mandel: Zone Eleven PDF Author:
Publisher: Damiani Limited
ISBN: 9788862087483
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 112

Book Description
Zone Eleven is a reference to Ansel Adams' Zone System, a method to control exposure of the negative in order to obtain a full range of tonality in the photographic print from the deepest black of Zone 0 to the brightest highlight in Zone 10. Zone Eleven is a metaphor coined by artist Mike Mandel in his challenge to create a book of Adams' photographs outside of the bounds of his personal work. Many of these photographs were found in the archives of his commercial and editorial assignments, and from his experimentation with the new Polaroid material of the times. For this book, Mandel has unearthed images that are unexpected for Adams, and created a new context of facing page relationships, and sequence. Zone Eleven is the product of Mike Mandel's research of over 50,000 Adams images located within four different archives to present a body of Adams' work that was unknown until now. Mike Mandel is well known for his collaboration with Larry Sultan in the 1970s - 1990s. They published Evidence in 1977, a collection of 59 photographs chosen from more than two million images that the artists viewed at the archives of government agencies and tech-oriented corporations. Conceptually, Zone Eleven is a companion book to Evidence. As Evidence reframes the institutional documentary photograph with new context and meaning, Zone Eleven responds to the audience expectation of "the iconic Ansel Adams nature photograph." But Mandel selects images that do not fit that expectation. Zone Eleven is a book of Ansel Adams images that surprisingly speak to issues of the social relations, the built environment, and alienation.

Headlands

Headlands PDF Author: Miles DeCoster
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
"The publication of this book marks a time of transition for the Marin Headlands. After 100 years of military occupation, obscure and off limits to the public, the Marin Headlands, under the stewardship of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, are emerging into the light of public use. Headlands is a portrait of this place--hills, cliffs, beaches, and coves unwittingly protected against the advances of commercial development by the army. The headlands are rich in historical significance, natural beauty, and environmental phenomena, and countless incidents of irony, juxtaposition, and camouflage. This book is a portrait of the quiet turnings and sudden grandeur of a wild place. It also tracks the process of discovery by five artists who began their explorations of the headlands in the fall of 1987."--from preface

Angels in Fall

Angels in Fall PDF Author: Karin Apollonia Müller
Publisher: Kruse Publisher
ISBN: 9783873973992
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Copies of the classic "New Objective" photo book Angels in Fall, originally published in 2001 and thought to be out of print, are now available again. In it, vast, rational parking lots loom into focus, the smoggy grid of a Los Angeles neighborhood evaporates into the horizon and a man finds shelter from a rainstorm under an orange plastic sheet in an industrial wasteland... The landscapes of the respected German-born, Los Angeles-based photographer Karin Apollonia Müller evoke human presence and absence and the spatiality of human desire at a time when all things synthetic, flexible and global have overtaken their more organic and local counterparts. According to Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's important survey The Photobook Volume II, Müller "shows non-place rather than place, an environment that has an ethereal, other-worldly quality. It is a city familiar to us from moving images, yet in her hands it emerges both fresh and strange. This is the most convincing photographic representation of Los Angeles since that of Ed Ruscha in the 1960s and Robert Adams' Los Angeles Spring of 1986." And Christopher Knight of the Los Angeles Times wrote, "A more apposite public portrait of this city would be hard to imagine."
