The ASEAN Economic Community

The ASEAN Economic Community PDF Author: Sanchita Basu Das
Publisher: Institute of Southeast Asian Studies
ISBN: 9814519014
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 532

Book Description
This is an important and timely volume: important because ASEAN is an increasingly significant and influential regional and global actor; and timely because, as the 2015 ASEAN Economic Community target approaches, what is needed is a sympathetic yet arms-length survey of the issues and challenges. ASEAN will miss some of the targets laid out in its AEC Blueprint, but the reader is left in no doubt that the ASEAN spirit is alive and well. The editors include a distinguished former Secretary General of ASEAN and the leading academic analyst of ASEAN economic cooperation. They and their co-editors are to be congratulated for soliciting contributions from an outstanding and diverse group of authors, and then adding their highly authoritative commentary and analysis. A must read for anybody seriously interested in ASEAN.

Book Description
On 28 July 2008, the ASEAN Studies Centre and the Regional Economic Studies Programme, both of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung organized a roundtable on The ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint. The brainstorming session gathered Southeast Asian experts from the region to discuss the AEC Blueprint, which ASEANs leaders had adopted at their summit meeting in November 2007, and the prospects of any obstacles to its implementation by the target year, 2015. The roundtable started with a progress report on the AEC Blueprint given by S. Pushpanathan, Principal Director of Economic Integration and Finance, ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta. Thereafter, the sessions examined the various aspects of the Blueprint tackling the non-tariff barriers, designing a comprehensive ASEAN Investment Agreement, a regional framework for competition policy, the role of infrastructure development in economic integration, the importance of international production networks in economic integration, etc.

Book Description
Launched in 1986, Laos’s reform policies rescued the country from the failures of central planning and self-isolation adopted after the foundation of the Lao PDR in 1975. Now on a path to economic prosperity, Laos enjoys greater political stability and international status, thanks in part to its participation in regional and international institutions. The China-Laos railway has transformed Laos into a transport and logistics hub and a game changer for the country, opening up new economic opportunities and enhancing connectivity with ASEAN countries. This book examines Laos’ geopolitics, economics, and its position of non-alignment in Southeast Asia. It delves into the geopolitical contest between China’s rise and the United States’ pivot, particularly in Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region, affecting the existing ASEAN order. It discusses Laos’s centrality in ASEAN and pragmatic approach to managing its relationships with Vietnam, China, the United States, Russia, and other regional powers in the country. Furthermore, the book explores how ASEAN member states are responding to strategic competition between the U.S. and China, including issues such as the South China Sea disputes; the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and Myanmar’s enduring crisis Finally, it highlights Laos’s 2024 ASEAN chairmanship as a pivotal opportunity to exert leadership and influence regional diplomacy within the ASEAN community. The country aims to expand ASEAN’s external relations and strengthen ASEAN’s centrality and unity, and construct regional architecture for stability, peace, and development in the ASEAN region under the theme “ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience”.

ASEAN Centrality and the ASEAN-US Economic Relationship

ASEAN Centrality and the ASEAN-US Economic Relationship PDF Author: Peter A. Petri
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780866382465
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 75

Book Description
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is strategically significant because of its size, dynamism, and role in the Asian economic and security architectures. This paper examines how ASEAN seeks to strengthen these assets through "centrality" in intraregional and external policy decisions. It recommends a two-speed approach toward centrality in order to maximize regional incomes and benefit all member economies: first, selective engagement by ASEAN members in productive external partnerships and, second, vigorous policies to share gains across the region. This strategy has solid underpinnings in the Kemp-Wan theorem on trade agreements. It would warrant, for example, a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement with incomplete ASEAN membership, complemented with policies to extend gains across the region. The United States could support this framework by pursuing deep relations with some ASEAN members, while broadly assisting the region's development.

Economic Law Reforms in the ASEAN Emerging Economies

Economic Law Reforms in the ASEAN Emerging Economies PDF Author: Terukazu Suruga
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9789819915583
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This book reviews the periodic changes in the legal policies of the late-developing ASEAN countries, often known as the CLMV countries (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam), in their continuous path toward globalization after the collapse of the socialist bloc. The book also identifies the characteristics of the legal reforms in their present stage guided by the common framework under the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) moving toward 2025. The first stage is illustrated by the ASEAN-style utilization of foreign investments as reflected in all investment laws and policies of CLMV countries in the 1990s, which featured entry control (as “sticks”) and investment incentives (as “carrots”). Those controls and incentives were the means to induce investors to assume various performance requirements to contribute to industrial policies. The second stage witnessed a shift toward enhanced liberalization as an endeavor toward the WTO accession during the 2000s, as seen in the integrated investment laws that appealed for the national treatment of foreign investors. At the same time, those investment laws emphasized the substantive provisions (e.g., fair and equitable treatment and indirect expropriation) and procedural protections (e.g., provision of Investor–State Dispute Resolution mechanisms) as an appeal for stabilization of the investment climate. The third stage of legal policy, as evidenced by the recent amendments to the investment laws, is newly focused on environmental and social considerations, which seems to be an indispensable response to the increasing social protests against the negative impacts of investment promotion. Simultaneously, the means of administrative controls over investors, established in the first stage, are uniquely utilized for the realization of new goals.
