Book Description
"Arguably the finest account of sniping during World War II." – Adrian Gilbert, author of Challenge of Battle. "Undoubtedly literature’s most remarkable account of sniper action." – Charles W. Sasser, former US Army Special Forces soldier and author of One Shot–One Kill Lyudmila Pavlichenko was one of the most successful – and feared – female snipers of all time. When Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa in June 1941 she left her university studies to join the Red Army. Ignoring offers of positions as a nurse she became part of Soviet Russia’s elite group of female snipers. Within a year she had 309 confirmed kills, including 29 enemy sniper kills. Renowned as the scourge of German soldiers, she was regarded as a key heroic figure for the war effort and, in 1942, on Stalin’s personal orders, she travelled as part of a Soviet delegation to the West, fundraising in Canada, Great Britain and the USA. Dubbed ‘Lady Death’, she spoke out about gender equality in the Red Army and made the case for the USA to continue the fight against the Nazis in Europe. The folk singer Woody Guthrie wrote a song about her exploits – ‘Miss Pavlichenko’ – and she visited the White House, where she formed an unlikely but long-lasting friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt. In November 1942 she visited Coventry and accepted donations of £4,516 from Coventry workers to pay for three X-ray units for the Red Army. She also visited a Birmingham factory as part of her fundraising tour.

Book Description
This collection of poems is a companion for you as you walk through the seasons of change in your life. This book is a window into the transgender experience for everyone, those with a shared lived experience, and those who are seeking more understanding. These poems are the sweat of gender transition, the tears of trauma and the kernels of the reclamation of authentic self. This book is drenched in support from the healing power of nature, who is the ultimate teacher on embracing death and dying to make way for living life to its fullest. What you are about to experience is the veneration of the process of meeting one's own pain and tender vulnerability. It is in this encounter that oppressive structures, worn out coping strategies and opaque distracting clutter pass away, giving rise to a surprising and refreshing down-to-the-bone self-intimacy and realness. Lady Death will support you in being gentle with yourself as you experience, loss, change and deepening in authenticity.

The Written and the Visual
Author: Małgorzata Łuczyńska-Hołdys
Publisher: V&R Unipress
ISBN: 3847012533
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 229
Book Description
The author investigates the points of contact between literature, visual arts and feminist criticism by offering fresh readings of selected Romantic and Victorian poems about women and a discussion of their wide-ranging visual history – a subject which has not yet been undertaken in a book-length study. The innovative feature of the project lies in its scope and merit: extensive readings of 19th century poetry, informed by carefully chosen critical approaches, are followed by a rich overview and analysis of visual renderings of the poems in question. Łuczyńska-Hołdys has succeeded in bringing to light previously unknown or undiscussed works, and reappraised many well-known paintings and illustrations.
