Esta obra es resultado directo del Proyecto de Investigación de Excelencia de la Junta de Andalucía La traducción como actividad editorial en la Andalucía del siglo XIX: Catálogo y Archivo digitalizado (P06-HUM-1511), realizado por un equipo de investigación compuesto por diez profesores de las Universidades de Málaga y Pablo de Olavide (Sevilla), de 2007 a 2010. En sus cinco primeros capítulos se describen los principales hallazgos de la investigación, tanto desde un punto de vista transversal como local, este último centrado en la publicación de obras traducidas en tres ciudades andaluzas (Cádiz, Granada y Málaga) durante el siglo XIX. Los cinco últimos estudian, desde criterios traductológicos, cinco obras traducidas en Andalucía, seleccionadas por sus especiales méritos. Sorprende hoy la intensa producción editorial que, con un marcado carácter propio, llevaron a cabo las imprentas de las principales ciudades andaluzas durante el siglo XIX y, sobre todo, la publicación de más de novecientas obras traducidas. Es este un ámbito de investigación prácticamente inexplorado hasta la fecha, en el que este libro constituye un primer testimonio de la labor de numerosos traductores andaluces, hasta la fecha injustamente olvidados. El editor de esta monografía, Juan Jesús Zaro, es Catedrático del Departamento de Traducción e Interpretación de la Universidad de Málaga e Investigador Principal del Proyecto, así como traductor literario. This volume addresses some lacunae in Hispanic linguistic research by focusing on new scholarly directions, exploring understudied topics as well as speech communities, and presenting new takes on relevant linguistic and sociocultural issues. This publication answers questions which have emerged as a result of the rapid increase in Hispanic linguistic research since the latter part of the twentieth century or that have remained open in spite of it. With the rapid growth of Hispanic Linguistics during the 21st century, the topics included in this volume are representative of the breadth, vitality, and interdisciplinarity of contemporary linguistic scholarship. They also reflect that linguistics, in general, has become more methodologically sophisticated. This book is comprised of twelve chapters divided into three parts. Part I addresses language ideology and language contact issues that are embedded in important sociolinguistic and cultural topics chronologically spanning from the 16th century to the present. Although these issues take place in Spain, the United States, Turkey and Ecuador, they pertain ideologically to all corners of the Hispanic World and beyond. Part II is devoted to pragmatics and language variation with topics that transport us to Colombia, Mexico, Spain and Venezuela. The study of politeness strategies shows how Spanish speakers reduce social distance between interlocutors as they make conversation a pleasant and cooperative meeting place. (abridged and revised) This reference grammar offers intermediate and advanced students a reason ably comprehensive guide to the morphology and syntax of educated speech and plain prose in Spain and Latin America at the end of the twentieth century. Spanish is the main, usually the sole official language of twenty-one countries,} and it is set fair to overtake English by the year 2000 in numbers 2 of native speakers. This vast geographical and political diversity ensures that Spanish is a good deal less unified than French, German or even English, the latter more or less internationally standardized according to either American or British norms. Until the 1960s, the criteria of internationally correct Spanish were dictated by the Real Academia Espanola, but the prestige of this institution has now sunk so low that its most solemn decrees are hardly taken seriously - witness the fate of the spelling reforms listed in the Nuevas normas de prosodia y ortograjia, which were supposed to come into force in all Spanish-speaking countries in 1959 and, nearly forty years later, are still selectively ignored by publishers and literate persons everywhere. The fact is that in Spanish 'correctness' is nowadays decided, as it is in all living languages, by the consensus of native speakers; but consensus about linguistic usage is obviously difficult to achieve between more than twenty independent, widely scattered and sometimes mutually hostile countries. Peninsular Spanish is itself in flux.
