De nos jours, malgré les progrès faits en termes d'hygiène bucco-dentaire et d'accès aux soins, nombreux sont les enfants et adolescents à souffrir d'édentements et de pertes de substance dentaire. Les conséquences sur la croissance maxillo-faciale et staturo-pondérale ainsi que sur les plans psychologique et comportemental peuvent être dramatiques. Une réhabilitation prothétique est nécessaire. Plusieurs types de prothèses sont à notre disposition : adjointes ou conjointes ; conventionnelles car faisant partie de notre arsenal thérapeutique depuis un certain nombre d'années maintenant ou bien de conception récente, faisant appel à de nouveaux produits, matériaux et méthodes. Ces nouvelles prothèses en voie de développement préfigurent le futur de la prothèse pédiatrique. Cependant, peu nombreux sont les jeunes patients à pouvoir bénéficier de prothèses dentaires, conventionnelles ou nouvelles. Le coût financier et la faible démocratisation des soins prothétiques pédiatriques auprès des praticiens peuvent expliquer que l'abstention thérapeutique soit malheureusement si souvent privilégiée.
