REGINE - Regularisations in Europe

REGINE - Regularisations in Europe PDF Author: Martin Baldwin-Edwards
Publisher: Amsterdam University Press
ISBN: 9085550084
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 576

Book Description
REGINE is a research project on regularisation practices in the European Union. The aim of the project is to provide a thorough mapping of practices relating to the regularisation of third country nationals illegally resident in EU Member States. Two additional non-EU countries - Switzerland and the US - will also be covered to gain insights in regularisation practices and the impact of regularisations elsewhere. In examining regularisation practices, the project also investigates the relationship of regularisation policies to the overall migration policy framework, including to protection issues and refugee policies. Moreover, the project examines the political position of different stakeholders towards regularisation policies on the national level. Finally, the project examines potential options for policies on regularisation on the European level, incorporating Member States as well as other stakeholders' views on possible instruments on the European level.

Year of Sorrows

Year of Sorrows PDF Author: W. Gregory Monahan
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
"Year of Sorrows draws upon an extensive array of archival sources to chronicle the famine crisis of 1709 in Lyon and its surrounding provinces." "Combining a traditional narrative of human struggle and desperate improvisation with contemporary analysis, Monahan takes his readers from the court of Versailles through the cities of Lyon into the hovels of French peasants who resisted the city's demand for their grain. Monahan goes on to analyze the political, social, economic, and demographic impact of the famine on an early modern city and explores the many conflicts created by the crisis between city and monarchy, city and countryside, and among various groups within Lyon. According to Monahan, the famine of 1709 serves as a prism to refract the interactions between royal finances and food shortages, between elites and the powerless, and between competing factions and power centers, and redefines the nature of the "absolute" monarchy of the Sun King." "This dynamic study of human struggle and its political and social dimensions sheds new light on a host of issues and problems in France before the Revolution and on the role that such crises have played in human history."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Forensic Anthropology and Medicine

Forensic Anthropology and Medicine PDF Author: Aurore Schmitt
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1597450995
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 462

Book Description
Recent political, religious, ethnic, and racial conflicts, as well as mass disasters, have significantly helped to bring to light the almost unknown dis- pline of forensic anthropology. This science has become particularly useful to forensic pathologists because it aids in solving various puzzles, such as id- tifying victims and documenting crimes. On topics such as mass disasters and crimes against humanity, teamwork between forensic pathologists and for- sic anthropologists has significantly increased over the few last years. This relationship has also improved the study of routine cases in local medicolegal institutes. When human remains are badly decomposed, partially skelet- ized, and/or burned, it is particularly useful for the forensic pathologist to be assisted by a forensic anthropologist. It is not a one-way situation: when the forensic anthropologist deals with skeletonized bodies that have some kind of soft tissue, the advice of a forensic pathologist would be welcome. Forensic anthropology is a subspecialty/field of physical anthropology. Most of the background on skeletal biology was gathered on the basis of sk- etal remains from past populations. Physical anthropologists then developed an indisputable “know-how”; nevertheless, one must keep in mind that looking for a missing person or checking an assumed identity is quite a different matter. Pieces of information needed by forensic anthropologists require a higher level of reliability and accuracy than those granted in a general archaeological c- text. To achieve a positive identification, findings have to match with e- dence, particularly when genetic identification is not possible.

Post-Dryout Heat Transfer

Post-Dryout Heat Transfer PDF Author: G.F. Hewitt
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351423320
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 448

Book Description
The study of post-dryout heat transfer has generated great interest because of its importance in determining maximum clad temperature in nuclear reactor loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCAs). An associated phenomenon, the deterioration of heat transfer in boiling, is significant to other industrial sectors. This book provides comprehensive coverage of post-dryout heat transfer, discussing such essential topics as post-dryout heat transfer in dispersed flow, interpretation and use of transient data in surface rewetting by reinstatement of flow or by reducing heat flux, rod bundles, two-phase flow occurrences in the post-dryout region, various methods for predicting ""inverted annular flow,"" and new experiments for measuring thermodynamic nonequilibrium with probes in the channel. The book also presents a basis for independent safety assessment of nuclear reactors and chemical plant systems where post-dryout heat transfer may occur. Post-Dryout Heat Transfer will be a useful reference for researchers and professionals in the nuclear and chemical production industries.

Veterans at Risk

Veterans at Risk PDF Author: Institute of Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 030904832X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 448

Book Description
Recently, World War II veterans have come forward to claim compensation for health effects they say were caused by their participation in chemical warfare experiments. In response, the Veterans Administration asked the Institute of Medicine to study the issue. Based on a literature review and personal testimony from more than 250 affected veterans, this new volume discusses in detail the development and chemistry of mustard agents and Lewisite followed by interesting and informative discussions about these substances and their possible connection to a range of health problems, from cancer to reproductive disorders. The volume also offers an often chilling historical examination of the use of volunteers in chemical warfare experiments by the U.S. militaryâ€"what the then-young soldiers were told prior to the experiments, how they were "encouraged" to remain in the program, and how they were treated afterward. This comprehensive and controversial book will be of importance to policymakers and legislators, military and civilian planners, officials at the Department of Veterans Affairs, military historians, and researchers.

Philosophy in a Time of Terror

Philosophy in a Time of Terror PDF Author: Giovanna Borradori
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226066657
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
The idea for Philosophy in a Time of Terror was born hours after the attacks on 9/11 and was realized just weeks later when Giovanna Borradori sat down with Jürgen Habermas and Jacques Derrida in New York City, in separate interviews, to evaluate the significance of the most destructive terrorist act ever perpetrated. This book marks an unprecedented encounter between two of the most influential thinkers of our age as here, for the first time, Habermas and Derrida overcome their mutual antagonism and agree to appear side by side. As the two philosophers disassemble and reassemble what we think we know about terrorism, they break from the familiar social and political rhetoric increasingly polarized between good and evil. In this process, we watch two of the greatest intellects of the century at work.
