Hitler's Brandenburgers

Hitler's Brandenburgers PDF Author: Lawrence Paterson
Publisher: Greenhill Books
ISBN: 1784382302
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 498

Book Description
‘A fitting tribute to Germany's clandestine warriors, and a guarantee that their extraordinary efforts have not been relegated to comparative obscurity or entirely forgotten’ - David R Higgins. Hitler's daring and pioneering Brandenburgers special forces served in every German theatre of action. This is the most comprehensive account of an unusual and profoundly successful band of men. Lawrence Paterson traces the origins of the small unit, before the outbreak of war in 1939, as the brainchild of Admiral Canaris and part of his Abwehr intelligence unit through through to its breaking up in 1944 when it was largely converted to a, conventional Panzergrenadier division. At that point, many Brandenburgers transferred to Otto Skorzeny’s SS Jägdverbände. It is well-known that German troops disguised themselves as Allied troops for the Battle of the Bulge - but less well known the Brandenburger operations used such disguises - more effectively -in in advance of the Blitzkrieg in 1939-41. Despite their profound success as commando raiding troops their history has been overshadowed by equivalent Allied units and largely ignored. However, within North Africa the Brandenburgers employed similar techniques to the SAS and LRDG, at first earning Erwin Rommel’s disapproval for their unorthodox methods until he began to feel the effect of similar Allied raids. Paterson details the roles of key individuals, such as Theodor von Hippel, along with forensic details of key operations. He explodes many of the myths about the unit and provides a clear and comprehensive history of this key part of the Wehrmacht.

Remembering World War II

Remembering World War II PDF Author: Anastasia Glawion
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3662667088
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 296

Book Description
The book demonstrates an evidence-based approach to online memory practices of World War II. Network analysis is applied to reduce a massive and unreadable dataset of forum texts and user relations. Further, the results are combined with other text analysis methods, such as topic modeling and contrastive stylometric analyses. A sample of discussions from each group is read and categorized. Based on the results, the forum users‘ memory practices are labelled as empirical, conversational and conservational practices, whereby recent theoretical developments in Memory Studies are considered.

Gravel Heart

Gravel Heart PDF Author: Abdulrazak Gurnah
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1526656086
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
By the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature 2021 'The elegance and control of Gurnah's writing, and his understanding of how quietly and slowly and repeatedly a heart can break, make this a deeply rewarding novel' Kamila Shamsie, Guardian For seven-year-old Salim, the pillars upholding his small universe – his indifferent father, his adored uncle, his treasured books, the daily routines of government school and Koran lessons – seem unshakeable. But it is the 1970s, and the winds of change are blowing through Zanzibar: suddenly Salim's father is gone, and the island convulses with violence and corruption the wake of a revolution. It will only be years later, making his way through an alien and hostile London, that Salim will begin to understand the shame and exploitation festering at the heart of his family's history. 'Riveting ... The measured elegance of Gurnah's prose renders his protagonist in a manner almost uncannily real' New York Times 'Glittering ... Each work is different from the last, yet they build into a powerfully evocative oeuvre that keeps coming back to the same questions, in spare, graceful prose, about the ties that bind and the ties that fray' Telegraph 'A colourful tale of life in a Zanzibar village, where passions and politics reshape a family... Powerful' Mail on Sunday
