The monasticiorder to which it belonged had its origin at Cisteaux, in France, in the early part of the 12th century. The first monastery of the order founded in England was at Rievaux, in the most romantic part of the East Riding. The Kirkstall community, however, was instituted first at Bernoldswic by a colony Of monks, Of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Mary, at York. The Prior, sub-prior, and several brethren desirous Of a stricter rule, left that community, and founded a branch of the sev'erer order at Bernoldswic, in.
