The monasticiorder to which it belonged had its origin at Cisteaux, in France, in the early part of the 12th century. The first monastery of the order founded in England was at Rievaux, in the most romantic part of the East Riding. The Kirkstall community, however, was instituted first at Bernoldswic by a colony Of monks, Of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Mary, at York.
