Book Description
After two impressively peaceful decades, there are signs of a dangerous degree of complacency in Kiribati's view of its domestic and external affairs. Forms of cultural and political resistance to change have thus been encouraged, and these are handicapping the nation's response to development risks. Eight leading sources of development risk confronting Kiribati are identified, and these require understanding and appropriate responses in the form of well-formulated national development strategies. Based on a thorough assessment of risks, priorities, and options by sector in the main report, 16 policy actions are recommended as keys to the full range of responses that need to be formulated to cope with development risk.

Fish for the future: Fisheries development and food security for Kiribati in an era of global climate change

Fish for the future: Fisheries development and food security for Kiribati in an era of global climate change PDF Author: Campbell, B.[Author]; Hanich, Q.[Author]
Publisher: WorldFish
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 80

Book Description
The Republic of Kiribati is a vast South Pacific island group with one of the largest exclusive economic zones (EEZs) in the world. Kiribati waters support a wealth of marine fisheries activities. These activities occur in oceanic, coastal and inshore environments and range from large, foreign, industrial-scale oceanic fishing operations to small-scale, domestic, inshore subsistence fisheries, aquaculture and recreational fisheries. Kiribati has developed a framework of domestic and international governance arrangements that are designed to sustainably manage its wealth of marine resources. The report provides background information for fisheries projects in Kiribati that aim to build food security, improve artisanal livelihoods and strengthen community engagement in fisheries governance. It provides information on the current status of Kiribati fishery resources (oceanic and coastal), their current governance and future challenges. Fish and fisher alike pay little heed to maritime boundaries and bureaucratic distinctions. This report covers both sides of the oceanic/coastal boundary because of the I-Kiribati communities’ interest in oceanic fisheries such as tuna and their heavy dependence on its fisheries resources for food security and economic development. The report focuses on two potential pilot sites for community-based fisheries management projects: North Tarawa and Butaritari.

Economic Costs of Inadequate Water and Sanitation

Economic Costs of Inadequate Water and Sanitation PDF Author: Asian Development Bank
Publisher: Asian Development Bank
ISBN: 9292545019
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 169

Book Description
The inadequate water supply and sanitation situation in South Tarawa has contributed to high rates of water-borne diseases and environmental degradation in the country's main urban center. There has been limited capital investment in water supply and sanitation infrastructure and ongoing operations and maintenance in South Tarawa, in part, as a result of low cost recovery in service delivery. To enable more informed policy responses to address the current situation, this study seeks to estimate the total economic costs associated with inadequate water and sanitation services in South Tarawa.

The Invention of Disaster

The Invention of Disaster PDF Author: JC Gaillard
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317617320
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
This theoretical contribution argues that the domination of Western knowledge in disaster scholarship has allowed normative policies and practices of disaster risk reduction to be imposed all over the world. It takes a postcolonial approach to unpack why scholars claim that disasters are social constructs while offering little but theories, concepts and methods supposed to be universal in understanding the unique and diverse experiences of millions of people across very different cultures. It further challenges forms of governments inherited from the Enlightenment that have been rolled out as standard and ultimate solutions to reduce the risk of disaster. Ultimately, the book encourages the emergence of a more diverse set of world views/senses and ways of knowing for both studying disasters and informing policy and practice of disaster risk reduction. Such pluralism is essential to better reflect local realities of what disasters actually are around the world. This book is an essential read for scholars and postgraduate students interested in disaster studies as well as policy-makers and practitioners of disaster risk reduction.

Cook Islands 2008 Social and Economic Report

Cook Islands 2008 Social and Economic Report PDF Author: Asian Development Bank
Publisher: Asian Development Bank
ISBN: 9292571907
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
Cook Islands has transformed its economy since the public debt crisis of the mid-1990s. The economy is private sector-led, the Government is now on a sound financial footing and well placed to address key development issues, and the economy has proved its resilience in the face of five cyclones in 2005. The tourism sector remains the main driver of growth and visitor arrivals are expected to continue to grow. Infrastructure works are a development priority, both to support economic growth and to address the rising pressures on the all-important natural environment. Improved education services are needed to meet the ever-rising expectations of the population, and the aging population and steady rise in noncommunicable disease are placing new pressures on the health and welfare systems. The gap between living standards on the main centers of Rarotonga and Aiututaki and the outer islands is a further key development issue. Continued improvement in institutional performance lies at the heart of an effective response to these needs. This report discusses options for responding to these needs with a view to helping guide public policy formulation in the Cook Islands.
