Book Description
Processes that take place at a phase boundary connected with the transfer of electric charge - the electrode processes - are of great importance in many aspects of everyday life. Nevertheless, the elaboration of theories concerning these processes started only in the 1930s. In particular, results obtained during the last two decades have made it possible to survey the general theoretical fundamentals of electrode processes and to elucidate the reaction mechanisms of several important electrode processes. The main aim of the present work is to describe the most significant kinetic characteristics of an important group of electrode processes - the electrochemical dissolution of metals (anodic and spontaneous dissolution). An overview is given on the kinetics of the complex processes taking place in consecutive and parallel reaction paths. In this respect the book fills a gap, as it is the first time that a work relevant to the stepwise mechanism of electrode processes has been published. The value of the work is enhanced by the inclusion of the author's own results, which are assessed together with those of other research workers.

Electrochemical Kinetics
Author: Klaus J. Vetter
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483266397
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 488
Book Description
Electrochemical Kinetics: Theoretical Aspects focuses on the processes, methodologies, reactions, and transformations in electrochemical kinetics. The book first offers information on electrochemical thermodynamics and the theory of overvoltage. Topics include equilibrium potentials, concepts and definitions, electrical double layer and electrocapillarity, and charge-transfer, diffusion, and reaction overvoltage. Crystallization overvoltage, total overvoltage, and resistance polarization are also discussed. The text then examines the methods of determining electrochemical reaction mechanisms, including examination of the overall electrode reaction and determination of the type of overvoltage and reaction kinetics. A list of frequently used symbols is also provided. The book is a valuable reference for readers interested in the study of electrochemical kinetics.

Kinetics and Structure Aspects of the Dissolution of Stainless Steels in Phosphoric Acid
Author: Michael Schorr
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Electronic books
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The dissolution of metals in acids is a heterogeneous electrochemical reaction, taking place at the interface between a solid and a liquid, described in terms of energy and configuration of the species involved. The energy of activation for two stainless steels (SSs) in phosphoric acid (PA) was determined from their corrosion rates in the temperature range of 20,Äì120¬∞C, applying the Arrhenius equation. Energy of activation values for the overall process of anodic metal dissolution and cathodic hydrogen release is in the 10,Äì20 Kcal mol,àí1 range. Metal corrosion is a structure-sensitive process; its mechanism and rate are related to the density of surface defects, based on the Boltzmann expression. A model for the activated complex is proposed based on considerations of energy and configuration. This work is an integration of a theoretical analysis and an experimental investigation of metal corrosion in acids.

Electrode Kinetics for Chemists, Chemical Engineers, and Materials Scientists
Author: Eliezer Gileadi
Publisher: Capstone
ISBN: 9781560816263
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 620
Book Description
Offering a thorough explanation of electrode kinetics, this textbook emphasizes physical phenomena - rather than mathematical formalism - and elucidates the underlying principles of the different experimental techniques. Assuming an elementary knowledge of thermodynamics and chemical kinetics and minimal mathematical skills, coverage explores the arguments of two primary schools of thought: electrode kinetics and interfacial electrochemistry viewed as a branch of physical chemistry and from the perspective of analytical chemistry.
