Shackled
Author: Candy J. Cooper
Publisher: Astra Publishing House
ISBN: 1662620144
Category : Young Adult Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 194
Book Description
Here is the explosive story of the Kids for Cash scandal in Pennsylvania, a judicial justice miscarriage that sent more than 2,500 children and teens to a for-profit detention center while two judges lined their pockets with cash, as told by Candy J. Cooper, an award-winning journalist and Pulitzer Prize finalist. In the early 2000s, Judge Mark Ciavarella and Judge Michael Conahan of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania were known as no-nonsense judges. Juveniles who showed up in their courtrooms faced harsh words and even harsher sentencing. In the post-Columbine era, many people believed that was just what the county needed to ensure its children and teens stayed on the straight and narrow path. But as more and more children faced shocking sentences for seemingly benign crimes, and a newly built for-profit detention center filled up further and further, a sinister pattern of abuses and bribery emerged. Through extensive research and original reporting leading into contemporary times, award-winning journalist Candy J. Cooper tells the story of a scandal that the Juvenile Law Center calls “one of the largest and most serious violations of children’s rights in the history of the American legal system.”

Redemption

Book Description
Rarely do see we stories written about God, and even less about His creation. Too frequently, we limit the first verse of the Bible to what happened here on earth. However, the verse could easily read: In the beginning God created Heaven and (fill in the blank). We forget that God is infinitely more capable of creating every what-if scenario that men can only imagine and write about. However, God can make any scenario real. In the movie Contact, the character played by Jodie Foster says, The universe is a pretty big place. If its just us, seems like an awful waste of space. The author of those words was Carl Sagan. I do not think he would have thought that way if he had seriously considered the themes in C. S. Lewis Space Trilogy. C. S. Lewis wrote his Space Trilogy about God quarantining his creations from each other in the existing solar system. What I do in this fictional novel is show how three of his creations work, in different parts of the universe, against a fourth to bring about Gods will of saving the remnant from each and giving them the opportunity to experience his redemption. Therefore, the overarching purpose of this novel was to expand Lewis idea of the universe as a whole, and show how each creation stood in the presence of God and how, through Gods sovereignty, His will is done among these different creations.

Platinum Pohl
Author: Frederik Pohl
Publisher: Macmillan + ORM
ISBN: 1466826444
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 881
Book Description
Frederik Pohl, the bestselling author of The Boy Who Would Live Forever, is famous for his novels, but first and foremost, he is a master of the science fiction short story. For more than fifty years he has been writing incisive, entertaining SF stories, several hundred in all. Even while writing his bestselling triple-crown (Hugo, Nebula, Campbell Award) novel Gateway and the other Heechee Saga novels, he has always written short fiction. Now, for the first time, he has gathered together the best of his many stories in Platinum Pohl. Spanning the decades, these tales are in their way a living history of science fiction. Because Frederik Pohl has been on the frontlines of the field since the halcyon days of the late 1930s, and has written short stories in every decade since. And because he has always been a keen observer of the human condition and the world that is shaped by it, his stories reflect the currents of political movements, social trends, major events that have shaken the world . . . Yet at their core, all his stories are most acutely concerned with people. All sorts of people. Some are people you'll love, some you'll hate. But you will need to find out what happens to the people who inhabit these stories. Because Frederik Pohl imbues his characters with a depth and individuality that makes them as real as people you see every day. Of course, he also employs a mind-boggling variety of scientific ideas and science fictional tropes with which his characters must interact. And he does it all with seemingly no effort at all. That's some trick. Not everyone can do that . . . but that's why he was named a Grand Master of Science Fiction by his peers in the Science Fiction Writers of America. Here are his two Hugo Award winning stories, "Fermi and Frost" and "The Meeting" (with C. M. Kornbluth), along with such classic novellas as the powerful "The Gold at the Starbow's End" and "The Greening of Bed-Stuy," and stories such as "Servant of the People," "Shaffery Among the Immortals," and "Growing Up in Edge City," all finalists for major awards. And dozens of other wonderful tales, like "The Mayor of Mare Tranq" and the provocative "The Day the Martians Landed" and many others. Altogether, a grand collection of thought-provoking, entertaining science fiction by one of the all-time greats! At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
