Caps Lock

Caps Lock PDF Author: Ruben Pater
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789493246034
Category : Capitalism
Languages : en
Pages : 552

Book Description
Capitalism could not exist without the coins, banknotes, documents, information graphics, interfaces, branding, and advertisements made by graphic designers. Even anti-consumerist strategies such as social design and speculative design are appropriated to serve economic growth. It seems design is locked in a cycle of exploitation and extraction, furthering inequality and environmental collapse. CAPS LOCK uses clear language and visual examples to show how graphic design and capitalism are inextricably linked. The book features designed objects and also examines how the study, work, and professional practice of designers support the market economy. Six radical design cooperatives are featured that resist capitalist thinking in their own way, hoping to inspire a more socially aware graphic design.

The Promise of Assistive Technology to Enhance Activity and Work Participation

The Promise of Assistive Technology to Enhance Activity and Work Participation PDF Author: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 030945784X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 503

Book Description
The U.S. Census Bureau has reported that 56.7 million Americans had some type of disability in 2010, which represents 18.7 percent of the civilian noninstitutionalized population included in the 2010 Survey of Income and Program Participation. The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides disability benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. As of December 2015, approximately 11 million individuals were SSDI beneficiaries, and about 8 million were SSI beneficiaries. SSA currently considers assistive devices in the nonmedical and medical areas of its program guidelines. During determinations of substantial gainful activity and income eligibility for SSI benefits, the reasonable cost of items, devices, or services applicants need to enable them to work with their impairment is subtracted from eligible earnings, even if those items or services are used for activities of daily living in addition to work. In addition, SSA considers assistive devices in its medical disability determination process and assessment of work capacity. The Promise of Assistive Technology to Enhance Activity and Work Participation provides an analysis of selected assistive products and technologies, including wheeled and seated mobility devices, upper-extremity prostheses, and products and technologies selected by the committee that pertain to hearing and to communication and speech in adults.

Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies

Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies PDF Author: Seth M. Holmes
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520399455
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 323

Book Description
Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies provides an intimate examination of the everyday lives, suffering, and resistance of Mexican migrants in our contemporary food system. Seth Holmes, an anthropologist and MD in the mold of Paul Farmer and Didier Fassin, shows how market forces, anti-immigrant sentiment, and racism undermine health and health care. Holmes was invited to trek with his companions clandestinely through the desert into Arizona and was jailed with them before they were deported. He lived with Indigenous families in the mountains of Oaxaca and in farm labor camps in the United States, planted and harvested corn, picked strawberries, and accompanied sick workers to clinics and hospitals. This “embodied anthropology” deepens our theoretical understanding of the ways in which social inequities come to be perceived as normal and natural in society and in health care. In a substantive new epilogue, Holmes and Indigenous Oaxacan scholar Jorge Ramirez-Lopez provide a current examination of the challenges facing farmworkers and the lives and resistance of the protagonists featured in the book.

Saltwater

Saltwater PDF Author: Jessica Andrews
Publisher: Macmillan + ORM
ISBN: 0374719179
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 279

Book Description
A Best Book of 2020: Open Letters Review "Andrews’s writing is transportingly voluptuous, conjuring tastes and smells and sounds like her literary godmother, Edna O’Brien . . . What makes her novel sing is its universal themes: how a young woman tries to make sense of her world, and how she grows up." –Penelope Green, The New York Times Book Review This “luminous” (TheObserver) feminist coming-of-age novel captures in sensuous, blistering prose the richness and imperfection of the bond between a daughter and her mother It begins with our bodies . . . Safe together in the violet dark and yet already there are spaces beginning to open between us. From that first immaculate, fluid connection, through the ups and downs of a working-class childhood in northern England, the one constant in Lucy’s life has been her mother: comforting and mysterious, ferociously loving, tirelessly devoted, as much a part of Lucy as her own skin. Her mother's lessons in womanhood shape Lucy’s appreciation for desire, her sense of duty as a caretaker, her hunger for a better, perhaps reckless life. At university in glamorous London, Lucy’s background sets her apart. And then she is finished, graduated, adrift. She escapes to a tiny house in Donegal left empty by her grandfather, a place where her mother once found happiness. There she will take a lover, live inside art and the past, and track back through her memories and her mother’s stories to make sense of her place in the world. In “a stunning new voice in British literary fiction” (The Independent) that lays bare our raw, dark selves, Jessica Andrews’s debut honors the richness and imperfection of the bond between a daughter and her mother. Intricately woven in lyrical vignettes, Saltwater is a novel of becoming-- a woman, an artist-- and of finding a way forward by looking back.

Healing the Symptoms Known As Autism

Healing the Symptoms Known As Autism PDF Author: Kerri Rivera
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780989289047
Category : Autism in children
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
In the seven months since the release of the first edition of this book, 22 more children have lost their autism diagnosis and returned to a state of health, for a total of 115 recovered children and counting. Hundreds more have lost ATEC points, as well as shown many cognitive, behavioral, emotional and physical gains thanks to the protocol outlined in these pages. This edition includes all protocol updates and a whole lot more including: (1) how to heal older, self-injurious and/or aggressive children; (2) GcMAF and its role in healing autism; (3) gluten's role in molecular mimicry and autoimmunity; (4) a new method of CD preparation; (5) an improved and easier to follow parasite protocol; along with (6) a special calendar so you know what to do when; (7) many new testimonials from parents sharing their real-life experiences using this protocol; and much more... Dietrich Klinghardt MD, PhD, says... The world of autism is rocking again. Kerri Rivera has done it. In this comprehensive book she has condensed and simplified the core elements of the biomedical approach, those that work 90% of the time on 90% of the children. Her focus on using a unified and affordable approach to reduce the body burden of chronic infections and infestations is addressing the very core issue of most autistic children and adults. It has made her method the most powerful tool to this day to help many children recover safely, inexpensively and solidly. Her research is validated by the enormously positive response from parents from all over the world. Teri Arranga, Executive director of AutismOne, says... In 3 years, 115 children previously diagnosed with regressive autism were able to shed their diagnosis, their symptoms and return to an overall state of health and vitality. If you have any interest in finding out how they were able to heal you need to read this book. Kerri has a heart for children with autism, and she cares greatly about recommending safe, economical interventions that are helping to confront an epidemic.
