Book Description
Just Shelter is a work of political philosophy that examines the core injustices of the contemporary U.S. housing crisis and its relation to enduring racial injustices. It investigates gentrification, segregation, desegregation, integration, and homelessness. Taking current conditions and the historical practices that led to them into account, Ronald Sundstrom argues that to achieve justice in social-spatial arrangements we must prioritize the crafting and enforcement of housing policy that corrects the injustices of the past. If we do not address the history of racism in housing policy, we will never solve today's housing crisis.

Beyond Shelter after Disaster: Practice, Process and Possibilities

Beyond Shelter after Disaster: Practice, Process and Possibilities PDF Author: David Sanderson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317976975
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 171

Book Description
Providing shelter after a disaster is recognised as one of the most complex areas of humanitarian relief and recovery. Some aid agencies have stopped providing shelter altogether after bad experiences, while those that do quickly become engaged in challenges that go far beyond the provision of structures alone. Yet with the number and severity of disasters set to increase, due to climate change and rapid urban growth, the need for approaches that work has never been greater. This book explores the issues in three parts. The first, Practice, looks at lessons from past efforts. Part two, Process, proposes practical and effective people-centred approaches. Part three considers currently neglected issues such as disability, human rights and urban-oriented approaches. Through practical case studies and academic research, Beyond Shelter after Disaster critiques past methods and explores future options for improving practice in one of the most complex areas of post disaster relief and recovery. This book was originally published as a special issue in Environmental Hazards: Human and Policy Dimensions.

Subsidizing Shelter

Subsidizing Shelter PDF Author: Sandra J. Newman
Publisher: The Urban Insitute
ISBN: 9780877664147
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 212

Book Description
This study examines the relationship between income and housing assistance programs. The welfare system, through the explicit and implicit shelter allowances that welfare recipients receive as part of their public assistance benefits, spends at least $10 billion a year on housing assistance. The Department of Housing and Urban Development spends a similar amount. Yet, the two streams of government financing for low income housing are uncoordinated and frequently overlapping. Part 1 presents new evidence on both the nature and the impact of this two-pronged approach to providing shelter assistance to the poor. It compares the level of benefits available to households receiving various combinations of aid, and documents the housing outcomes that are produced by the two systems of shelter support. It includes the following chapters: (1) Executive Summary; (2) Introduction; (3) Shelter Allowances Under the Welfare System; (4) The Impact of the Two-Pronged System; and (5) Directions for Future Policy. Part 2 presents detailed statistics on estimated shelter allowances for each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia under the following programs: (1) Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC); (2) Supplemental Security Income (SSI); and (3) General Assistance (GA). Extensive statistical data are included on 42 tables, two graphs, and six appendices. (FMW)
