Villains of the Early Church: And How They Made Us Better Christians
Author: Mike Aqulilina
Publisher: Emmaus Road Publishing
ISBN: 1949013081
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 150
Book Description
The early Church faced its share of villains—persecutors like Nero and Julian, heretics like Marcion and Arius. And what good were they? Plenty, say the Church Fathers. The threat of persecution made Christians strong and bold. As noted author Mike Aquilina demonstrates in Villains of the Early Church: And How They Made Us Better Christians, the menace of heresy made Christians smarter — and deepened their knowledge of the divine mysteries. The villains of the ancient world proved the mettle of heroes like Peter and Paul, Irenaeus and Athanasius. Treachery and adversity inspired the Fathers’ clearest teaching, most entertaining invective, and more than a few memorable jokes. The time of villains—and heroes—is hardly over. Through Villains of the Early Church, you’ll learn how you can keep your good humor through trials and opposition, and all the while grow sharper in doctrine and warmer in devotion.

The Four Gospels as Historical Records
Heavy Duty
Author: K.K. Downing
Publisher: Da Capo Press
ISBN: 0306903296
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 282
Book Description
Get a backstage pass and see Judas Priest like you’ve never seen them before in this electrifying memoir by the band’s cofounder and former lead guitarist. Judas Priest formed in the industrial city of Birmingham, England, in 1969. With its distinctive twin-guitar sound, studs-and-leather image, and international sales of over 50 million records, Judas Priest became the archetypal heavy metal band in the 1980s. Iconic tracks like "Breaking the Law," "Living after Midnight," and "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" helped the band achieve extraordinary success, but no one from the band has stepped out to tell their or the band's story until now. As the band approaches its golden anniversary, fans will at last be able to delve backstage into the decades of shocking, hilarious, and haunting stories that surround the heavy metal institution. In Heavy Duty, guitarist K.K. Downing discusses the complex personality conflicts, the business screw-ups, the acrimonious relationship with fellow heavy metal band Iron Maiden, as well as how Judas Priest found itself at the epicenter of a storm of parental outrage that targeted heavy metal in the '80s. He also describes his role in cementing the band's trademark black leather and studs image that would not only become synonymous with the entire genre, but would also give singer Rob Halford a viable outlet by which to express his sexuality. Lastly, he recounts the life-changing moment when he looked at his bandmates on stage during a 2009 concert and thought, "This is the last show." Whatever the topic, whoever's involved, K.K. doesn't hold back.

Judas Kiss
Author: J.T. Ellison
Publisher: MIRA
ISBN: 0369718607
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 400
Book Description
It was a murder made for TV: a trail of tiny bloody footprints. An innocent toddler playing beside her mother's body. Stay tuned for the next riveting thriller in the Taylor Jackson series by New York Times bestselling author J.T. Ellison. Cameras and questions don't usually faze Nashville homicide lieutenant Taylor Jackson, but when pregnant Corinne Wolff is brutally murdered in her own home, the media frenzy surrounding the case is particularly nasty. When the seemingly model mommy is linked to an amateur porn website with underage actresses and unwitting players, the sharks begin to circle. The shock is magnified when an old adversary uses the sexy secret footage to implicate Taylor in a murder—an accusation that threatens her career, her reputation and her relationship. Both cases hinge on the evidence—real or manufactured—of crimes that go beyond passion, into the realm of obsessive vengeance and shocking betrayal. Just what the networks love. Previously Published. Read the Taylor Jackson Series by J.T. Ellison: Book 1: All the Pretty Girls Book 2: 14 Book 3: Judas Kiss Book 4: The Cold Room Book 5: The Immortals Book 6: So Close the Hand of Death Book 7: Where All the Dead Lie

Reading Between the Letters of the Gospels
Author: Mark C. Kiley
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 152
Book Description
What if the texts of the canonical Gospel authors provide commentary alongside the texts they created? That is the interpretative question pursued in many of these essays that supplement the collection done in 2012 for Wipf and Stock. Taking a cue from Aratos and Vergil, among others, these studies point to configurations of letters that reference some aspect of the topic dealt with in already integral words in the main text. Attention to letters sprinkled throughout a passage may uncover integral words on their own "but the beholder wanting." Through this lens, one may trace the formative influence of the letters Yhwh on Isaiah and Matthew, hear more echoes of Homer and Pindar in Mark, observe extensive engagement with Aratos in Luke-Acts, and the descriptor "beloved" used of Judas in John. Through this lens, one may detect that Matthew and Luke focused on the Pentateuch as a whole when they supplement Mark. The intercalated letters of the Gospel writers' names in the Farewell Discourse of John also suggest that he self-consciously works within the lineup that we now know. This reading strategy is an art as much as a science, but, when used responsibly, it opens a new question within traditional redactional investigations.
