Book Description
Excerpt from Journals, Conversations and Essays Relating to Ireland, Vol. 1 of 2 The state of Ireland was a subject of continual interest to Mr. Senior. The first of his Journals (written in 1819) contains an account of a visit to Ireland, and the last but one that he ever wrote is a record of his travels in Ireland in 1862. Throughout these forty-three years he advocated mainly the same principles - in pamphlets, reviews, and finally in the Journals which are now for the first time laid before the public. In 1861 he arranged the Papers mentioned in the Preface, with a view to their publication after his visit in 1862; but his health gave way before he had leisure to complete his design. As far as it was possible, the original plan has been adhered to in these volumes. The lapse of time has, however, rendered some changes expedient. Book Description
Excerpt from Grievances From Ireland, Vol. 2: June, 1906 We are the best friends of Mr. Bryce when we frankly tell him that the patience of the people has been sadly taxed, and is well nigh exhausted, and that we cannot be responsible if there is in the future any interrup tion of the peaceful state'of things that now prevails in the West of Ireland. (loud cheers.) If there is to be no acceleration of the work of the Board. Then let Mr. Bryce and those associated with him understand that those who find themselves at this moment at the head of the people will be constrained to have no further responsi bility for maintaining peace and order, and that if peace and order are interfered with in future the blame will lie largely on those gentle men responsible for the dilatoriness with which the work of the Congested Districts Board is now being done. Book Description
Excerpt from The Dublin Journal of Temperance, Science, and Literature, 1843, Vol. 2 But, alas! Matters did not end here. A few ys subsequent to the evenin to which I have alluded. Thurlo, whose love for ane was still as strong as ever, although his pride forbade him to' acknowledge it, received an anonymous letter, bearing the post mark of a distant town. This letter stated that his sweetheart had absolutely pledged herself to his 110 tested rival. This intelligence was maddening and unexpected. For he had hitherto all along attributed her behaviour to the real cause, and consequences resulted which, it is to be hoped, the unhappy author neither foresaw nor intended. Thurlo fell slck, so much ao, that he was obliged to kee his bed for two days. Durin that emod, when is mind had full leisure to bro over his imagined loss, he formed the resolution, the moment he was able to get up, to go once more to Jane, and ask her to become his; and, should she refuse, he made up his mind (to use his own expres sion) that if he should not have her, no one else should.
