B. Green, of Marlboro. Honored by the citizens of his county with many years of public service, he was serving his first term here. Gentle as a woman, lovable, quiet, unassuming, he won his way into the hearts of his associates of the Senate and lives in the memories of his friends, among whom the speaker is proud to have been enrolled. A committee from this body, consisting Of the Senators from Dillon, Florence and Darlington, and the President, attended the funeral, bearing a floral Offering as a slight testimonial of the affection of his brother Senators. Neither custom nor need demands that I, chosen the second time by my fellow citizens to preside over this honored body, bring to your notice any suggested legislation. It is beyond the province of my Office. Fresh from the people, to them alone and to your con sciences are you responsible. Assured that all are actuated by motives Of purest patriotism and a desire to promote the common good, we look forward with confidence to the results of this session.
