Book Description
Most Hemphill families in the United States and Canada can trace their ancestry to Northern Ireland and Ayreshire, Scotland before that. Several Hemphills emigrated from Ulster to America in the 1600s. The common ancestor of the members of the Hemphill Historical Society was John Hemphill (1715-1792) of Ulster. John and his wife, Margaret Ramsey were the parents of seven children, two or three of whom came to America. James Hemphill (1749-1836) settled in Tennessee and was the father of a large family. Descendants live in Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and other parts of the United States.
