Color Chart

Color Chart PDF Author: Ann Temkin
Publisher: The Museum of Modern Art
ISBN: 9780870707315
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
Color Chart celebrates a paradox: the lush beauty that results when contemporary artists assign colour decisions to chance, readymade source or arbitrary system. Midway through the 20th century, long-held convictions regarding the spiritual truth or scientific validity of particular colours gave way to an excitement about colour as a mass-produced and standardized commercial product. The Romantic quest for personal expression instead became Andy Warhol's 'I want to be a machine'; the artistry of mixing pigments was eclipsed by Frank Stella's 'Straight out of the can; it can't get better than that'. This book, and the exhibition it accompanies, is the first devoted to this pivotal transformation, and features work by some forty artists ranging from Ellsworth Kelly and Gerhard Richter to Sherrie Levine and Damien Hirst.

Regarding Warhol

Regarding Warhol PDF Author: Mark Lawrence Rosenthal
Publisher: Metropolitan Museum of Art
ISBN: 1588394697
Category : Art, Modern
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
This sumptuous volume presents the first full-scale exploration of warhol's tremendous influence across the generations of artists that have succeeded him. Warhol brought to the art world a unique awareness of the relationship that art might have with popular consumer culture and tabloid news, with celebrity, and with sexuality. Each of these themes is explored through visual dialogues between warhol and some sixty artists, among them John Baldessari, Vija Celmins, Gilbert & George, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Robert Gober, Nan Goldin, Damien Hirst, Alfredo Jaar, Deborah Kass, Alex Katz, Jeff Koons, Barbara Kruger, Glenn Ligon, Robert Mapplethorpe, Vik Muniz, Takashi Murakami, Bruce Nauman, Cady Noland, Elizabeth Peyton, Sigmar Polke, Richard Prince, Gerhard Richter, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman and Luc Tuymans. These juxtapositions not only demonstrate warhol's overt influence but also suggest how artists have either worked in parallel modes or developed his model in dynamic new directions. Featuring commentary by many of the world's leading contemporary artists, as well as a major essay by the celebrated critic Mark Rosenthal and an extensive illustrated chronology, Regarding Warhol is an out-standing publication that will be essential reading for anyone with an interest in contemporary art.

More Than You Wanted to Know About John Baldessari is the first complete collection of the writings of artist John Baldessari. Edited and with essays by Meg Cranston and Hans Ulrich Obrist, the texts in this two-volume set trace the development of Baldessari's understanding of art from the early 1960s through to the present, and includes an extended interview with the artist on the subject of his writing. The collection also includes numerous never-before-published texts as well as facsimiles of the original documents that illustrate Baldessari's composition of words, which achieve both literary and graphic impact.Baldessari's writing addresses a broad range of topics from the problem of colour in sculpture, to the problem of art students who need ideas, to the problem of money in the art world, while returning throughout to the very focused set of issues that are key to his own work.Principle among them is Baldessari's love of words and his long-standing investigation into the similarity and possible interchangeability of word and image. Also availableJohn Baldessari: More Than You Wanted to Know About John Baldessari. Is It Ours?

Is It Ours? PDF Author: Martha Buskirk
Publisher: University of California Press
ISBN: 0520344596
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 301

Book Description
If you have tattoos, who owns the rights to the imagery inked on your body? What about the photos you just shared on Instagram? And what if you are an artist, responding to the surrounding landscape of preexisting cultural forms? Most people go about their days without thinking much about intellectual property, but it shapes all aspects of contemporary life. It is a constantly moving target, articulated through a web of laws that are different from country to country, sometimes contradictory, often contested. Some protections are necessary—not only to benefit creators and inventors but also to support activities that contribute to the culture at large—yet overly broad ownership rights stifle innovation. Is It Ours? takes a fresh look at issues of artistic expression and creative protection as they relate to contemporary law. Exploring intellectual property, particularly copyrights, Martha Buskirk draws connections between current challenges and early debates about how something intangible could be defined as property. She examines bonds between artist and artwork, including the ways that artists or their heirs retain control over time. The text engages with fundamental questions about the interplay between authorship and ownership and the degree to which all expressions and inventions develop in response to innovations by others. Most importantly, this book argues for the necessity of sustaining a vital cultural commons.

Explodity

Explodity PDF Author: Nancy Perloff
Publisher: Getty Publications
ISBN: 1606065084
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
The artists’ books made in Russia between 1910 and 1915 are like no others. Unique in their fusion of the verbal, visual, and sonic, these books are meant to be read, looked at, and listened to. Painters and poets—including Natalia Goncharova, Velimir Khlebnikov, Mikhail Larionov, Kazimir Malevich, and Vladimir Mayakovsky— collaborated to fabricate hand-lithographed books, for which they invented a new language called zaum (a neologism meaning “beyond the mind”), which was distinctive in its emphasis on “sound as such” and its rejection of definite logical meaning. At the heart of this volume are close analyses of two of the most significant and experimental futurist books: Mirskontsa (Worldbackwards) and Vzorval’ (Explodity). In addition, Nancy Perloff examines the profound differences between the Russian avant-garde and Western art movements, including futurism, and she uncovers a wide-ranging legacy in the midcentury global movement of sound and concrete poetry (the Brazilian Noigandres group, Ian Hamilton Finlay, and Henri Chopin), contemporary Western conceptual art, and the artist’s book. Sound recordings of zaum poems featured in the book are available at www.getty.edu.
