Book Description
For centuries, the Christian churches and Christian theology have sought to forge their own identity by challenging the identity of Judaism. Christians often inquired whether Israel was still the people of God, whether the church had replaced Israel. An affirmative answer to the latter inquiry is often described as the "theology of substitution": the church has taken Israel's place. The implication is that there is no longer any place for Israel in God's plan of salvation. The history of Christian anti-Judaism is dramatic proof of the violent potential that is implicit in this Christian theology of substitution. After Auschwitz, the search for an alternative to this theology, a search which touches the heart of Christianity, has become a necessity. The central question of this book is whether - and how - Christianity can maintain its identity if it no longer understands itself as a substitute for Judaism. Didier Pollefeyt shows how the theme of substitution constitutes the basic theological problem for Christians in the encounter with Judaism. Bertold Klappert develops an alternative for the Christian theology of substitution by drawing on the work of Protestant theologians. Leon Klenicki offers a Jewish perspective, as he seeks to develop a theory of dialogical encounter for Jews and Christians. Terrence Merrigan reflects on the way in which the Christian rediscovery of Judaism can be significant in the light of the postmodern challenge of religious pluralism. Rik Hoet analyzes biblical metaphors which might serve as an alternative for the Christian theology of substitution.

Redeeming Our Sacred Story

Redeeming Our Sacred Story PDF Author: Mary C. Boys
Publisher: Paulist Press
ISBN: 1587682818
Category : Christianity and antisemitism
Languages : en
Pages : 365

Book Description
Stories of Jesus' passion and death lie at the core of Christian identity. They offer an encounter with his experience of the human condition: betrayals by those closest to him, his own fear of death, uncertainty about God's will, and the endurance of terrible suffering and an ignominious death. From generation to generation, these stories have functioned in sacred and saving ways for Christians. Yet, misinterpretations of the passion narratives have rationalized hostility to and violence against Jews as "Christ killers". This sacrilegious telling cries out for redemption. Redeeming Christianity's sacred story requires respect, even awe, for its power; demands rigorous examination of the history between Jews and Christians and the ethical obligation to be altered by this history; and entails pursuing solid biblical scholarship, principles for reinterpreting troubling texts, and incorporation into Christian spirituality. Redeeming Our Sacred Story challenges us to forge more just relations between Jews and Christians. It witnesses to the world that reconciliation is possible. (Back cover).

The Trouble With Christians, The Trouble With Jews

The Trouble With Christians, The Trouble With Jews PDF Author: Zola Levitt
Publisher: Zola Levitt Ministries
ISBN: 1930749791
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 121

Book Description
The trouble with Christians and the trouble with Jews is exactly the same: both subscribe to the God of Israel, the Creator God the God of Scripture but both have been remiss in actually reading Scripture. The different denominations of Christianity and of Judaism utilize Scripture differently, but it is patently obvious that the vast majority in either camp doesn’t have a significant grasp of the Bible. The polyglot divisions of Christianity and the arguing factions of Judaism can all be traced back to a lack of knowledge of Scripture. Finally, the crucial difference on the Messiah comes down to that same lack of knowledge.
