ISBN: 9780486409276
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 550

Book Description
Definitive, clearly written, and well-illustrated volume addresses all aspects of the subject, from the historical development of understanding metal fatigue to vital concepts of the cyclic stress that causes a crack to grow. Examines effect of stress concentrations on notches, theories of fatigue crack propagation, and many other topics. Seven appendixes describe laboratory fatigue testing, stress concentrations, material stress-strain relationships, and more. Invaluable text for students of engineering design and metallurgy.

Influence of Residual Stresses and Thermal Gradients on Mechanism of Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells

Influence of Residual Stresses and Thermal Gradients on Mechanism of Buckling of Shallow Spherical Shells PDF Author: Megumi Sunakawa
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Axial flow
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
This report contains results of a theoretical and experimental investigation of the influence of residual stresses and thermal gradients on stability of shallow spherical shells. Basic equations, thermoelastic problems for spherical shells, taking a large deformation into consideration, are derived. Assuming 'damped' axisymmetrical deformation pattern, solution for the stability of spherical shell subjected to external pressure is presented. Good agreement between the theoretical and previous experimental results is obtained. The effects of residual stresses and thermal gradients on stability of spherical shells subjected to external pressure are determined. These effects are of considerable significance, and should be taken into account in application. Experiments indicating the effects of residual stresses have been performed for 'inverted' shells subjected to symmetrical and eccentric concentrated loads.

Dynamic Stability of Columns under Nonconservative Forces

Dynamic Stability of Columns under Nonconservative Forces PDF Author: Yoshihiko Sugiyama
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030005720
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 236

Book Description
This book treats dynamic stability of structures under nonconservative forces. it is not a mathematics-based, but rather a dynamics-phenomena-oriented monograph, written with a full experimental background. Starting with fundamentals on stability of columns under nonconservative forces, it then deals with the divergence of Euler’s column under a dead (conservative) loading from a view point of dynamic stability. Three experiments with cantilevered columns under a rocket-based follower force are described to present the verifiability of nonconservative problems of structural stability. Dynamic stability of columns under pulsating forces is discussed through analog experiments, and by analytical and experimental procedures together with related theories. Throughout the volume the authors retain a good balance between theory and experiments on dynamic stability of columns under nonconservative loading, offering a new window to dynamic stability of structures, promoting student- and scientist-friendly experiments.

Tall Building Criteria and Loading

Tall Building Criteria and Loading PDF Author: Leslie E. Robertson
Publisher: ASCE Publications
ISBN: 9780784475751
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 916

Book Description
Prepared by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat of ASCE. This report examines the loads to which tall buildings are subjected so that engineers can precisely define the related structural elements that are necessary before translating a client's needs into a safe design. The report explores five different classes of loads?gravity loads and temperature affects, earthquake loads, wind loading and wind effects, fire, and accidental loads?as well as quality control and overall safety considerations.ØSteel buildings, which hold the record for height, tax the designer's ingenuity to provide adequate resistance to lateral loading. Concrete buildings are both more numerous and widely distributed, and for them vertical gravity loads may be the chief problem. Both steel and concrete buildings and lateral and vertical loads are addressed. Other subjects covered include: dead, live, cyclic snow, construction, and combined loads; code requirements; meteorological and environmental factors in design; firefighting provisions; and modeling. Contributions came from more than 800 contributors, all international and professional and heavily representing design and industrial firms. Condensed references follow each chapter, and a glossary is included.
