Book Description
Excerpt from January to April Distribution of the Common Shrimp on the South Atlantic Continental Shelf Work was conducted from the Service's M/V Pelican, a 75 -foot vessel equipped with a level-winding trawling winch and 5, 000 feet of l/2 -inch steel cable operated over a roller on the center stern of the vessel. Trawling was possible in depths up to 200 fathoms, but few hauls were made in depths greater than 100 fathoms. A small winch on the vessel's bow was employed for handling Nansen bottles, bottom grabs and sounding gear. Since the activities were exploratory, a lo-foot tryvnet, in reality a small otter trawl, was used ex clusively. The try - net is commonly used by commercial. Fishermen to locate concen trations of shrimp before setting the larger nets. It operates in the same manner as commercial trawls and proved to be an effective device for sampling an area in previous surveys of the Gulf Coast con ducted by the same vessel and crew. Fail ure to catch shrimp is therefore interpreted with confidence as indicating the absence of shrimp. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Survey of Shrimp Fisheries of Central and South America In many instances the catch, for economic and other reasons, may never approach its potential. Moreover, in numerous places shrimp species of small size form a great part of the potential supply. These small shrimp now have a limited market and unless marketing conditions change appreciably it is not likely that the catch will reach the poten tial soon. Book Description
Excerpt from Distribution and Relative Abundance of Commercially Important Pandalid Shrimps in the Northeastern Pacific Ocean A Gulf of Mexico shrimp trawl (schaefers and Johnson, 1957) measuring 41 feet 3 inches along the head rope was first used in 1955-56 off Washington. It subsequently became the major exploratory shrimp gear. The trawl was attached immediately behind the otter doors, which were fastened to a single warp line by a 25-fathom bridle. Each otter door was 2 feet high by 5 feet long. The net was constructed of 1 l/2-inch stretched mesh cotton webbing.areas shown on charts as having soft mud bottom. When the echo sounder indicated that the bottom was level enough to permit trawl ing, the net was fished. Considerable gear damage often resulted, for the echo sounder recording did not always enable us to interpret the bottom type correctly. During more recent cruises the use of a high-resolution, low frequency echo sounder provided better defi nition of bottom configuration and type, thus reducing gear damage and destruction (hitz, Johnson, and Pruter, In most instances exploratory drags were 30 minutes long. Known commercial shrimp grounds were not fished except when it was necessary to establish that the gear was functioning prop erly.
