Tant-Smith Debate
Author: C a Smith
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781796839180
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 70
Book Description
The purpose of water baptism in God's plan has been a topic of much disagreement among people who claim to be followers of Jesus Christ. Hundreds of debates have been held on this issue in the United States, especially between representatives of various Baptist churches and the churches of Christ. The role of Alexander Campbell in the religious history of our country has also been the focus of considerable controversy. This volume contains the text of a short written debate between C. A. Smith (Baptist) of Chickasha, Oklahoma, and J. D. Tant (Christian) of Brownsville, Texas. It began on March 7, 1935, and concluded on January 18, 1936. The proposition was: "I affirm that Matthias Luce did not baptize Alexander Campbell for (in order to) the remission of sins, according to history." C. A. Smith affirmed and J. D. Tant denied. C. A. Smith was 47 years old at the time of this debate, and he had been a Baptist minister for 26 years. This was his 49th debate in behalf of the Baptist cause. In addition to J. D. Tant, his opponents had included such well-known debaters as Will M. Thompson, W. Curtis Porter, J. W. Chism, J. N. Cowan, and J. W. Crumley.J. D. Tant's story is preserved in J. D. Tant--Texas Preacher, a biography written by his son Yater. At the time of this discussion he was 74 years old and had participated in more than 300 debates. In addition to the present debate, the Tant-Harding Debate and the Tant-Frost Debate are available from Thrasher Publications. This debate was originally printed as the Smith-Tant Debate on "Campbell's Baptism." It has been out of print for many years. That volume was scanned and processed using OCR software. In reviewing the manuscript, a number of errors were detected and corrected. The text was then re-formatted to the present form. The publisher hopes that the reader will find this volume interesting and worthwhile, while remembering that only the Scriptures are infallibly true and reliable.

Encyclopedia of Religion in the South
Author: Samuel S. Hill
Publisher: Mercer University Press
ISBN: 9780865547582
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 898
Book Description
The publication of the Encyclopedia of Religion in the South in 1984 signaled the rise in the scholarly interest in the study of Religion in the South. Religion has always been part of the cultural heritage of that region, but scholarly investigation had been sporadic. Since the original publication of the ERS, however, the South has changed significantly in that Christianity is no longer the primary religion observed. Other religions like Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism have begun to have very important voices in Southern life. This one-volume reference, the only one of its kind, takes this expansion into consideration by updating older relevant articles and by adding new ones. After more than 20 years, the only reference book in the field of the Religion in the South has been totally revised and updated. Each article has been updated and bibliography has been expanded. The ERS has also been expanded to include more than sixty new articles on Religion in the South. New articles have been added on such topics as Elvis Presley, Appalachian Music, Buddhism, Bill Clinton, Jerry Falwell, Fannie Lou Hamer, Zora Neale Hurston, Stonewall Jackson, Popular Religion, Pat Robertson, the PTL, Sports and Religion in the South, theme parks, and much more. This is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the South, religion, or cultural history.

The Churches of Christ
Author: Richard T. Hughes
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313074615
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 366
Book Description
This volume tells the story of the Churches of Christ, one of three major denominations that emerged in the United States from a religious movement led by Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone in the early 19th century. Beginning as an effort to provide a basis on which all Christians in America could unite, the leaders of the movement relied on the faith and practice of the primitive church. Ironically, this unity movement eventually divided precisely along the lines of its original agenda, as the Churches of Christ rallied around the restorationist banner while the Disciples of Christ gathered around the ecumenical cause. Yet, having begun as a countercultural sect, the Churches of Christ emerged in the 20th century as a culture-affirming denomination. This brief history, together with biographical sketches of major leaders, provides a complete overview of the denomination in America. The book begins with a concise yet detailed history of the denomination's beginnings in the early 19th century. Tracing the influence of such leaders as Stone and Campbell, the authors chronicle the triumphs and conflicts of the denomination through the 19th century and its reemergence and renewal in the 20th century. The biographical dictionary of leaders in the Churches of Christ rounds out the second half of the book, and a chronology of important events in the history of the denomination offers a quick reference guide. A detailed bibliographic essay concludes the book and points readers to further readings about the Churches of Christ.
